Most of us fall a bit short when it comes to taking pictures that are worthy of displaying in picture frames on our desks at work. Newer generation digital cameras have come a long way, however, making it possible for nearly everyone to take excellent pictures. After all, most digital cameras in use today are point-and-shoot models that do all of the work for you, from face recognition to determining on their own whether or not a flash is needed. Nonetheless, becoming a better photographer is possible when you have a bit of experience with your camera under your belt, and a touch of know-how. Grab your digital camera and take a look at these tips that will make your shots even better than ever:
• Snap more engaging photographs by making eye contact with your subject. Hold your camera at the subject's eye level and you will notice that you get a much more memorable shot. When shooting pictures of children or pets, get down on their level. This is much more appealing than shots taken that look down on the subject. What's more, pictures taken at eye level are more personable and inviting, and they draw in their audience.
• Put the emphasis on your subject by avoiding a distracting background. A flagpole that seems to spear your subject through the head will distract from the real subject of the photograph. When snapping a picture, be sure to take into consideration the subject's surroundings. Plain or simple background with little or no activity works best.
• Know when to use the flash. Bright sunlight can work to create deep shadows in the face. You can eliminate these shadows by using the flash on your camera, even when there is plenty of light outside. This is particularly true when the day is really sunny. If you have a choice between full flash and fill flash, the general rule is to use the fill flash for subjects five feet or closer, and the full flash for those subjects that are farther away than five feet.
• Know when to get closer. For subjects smaller than an average sized automobile, take a couple of steps closer to the subject before snapping your picture. Or better yet, zoom in. What you are trying to achieve is revealing details, like a charming set of freckles or a beautiful set of teeth.
• Understand when you are too close. While getting close makes for a better shot most of the time, you should also avoid getting too close. If you are too close, your pictures will turn out blurry. The closest distance for focusing on most digital cameras is around a yard, which is about one step from the camera's lens. Closer than this and your photos may not turn out as clear as you would like.
• Put your subject in the middle, but only when it looks best that way. The beauty of the digital camera is that you can shoot, shoot, and re-shoot until the shot you are taking turns out like you want it. Many times, the center is an ideal position for your subject, but this is not always true. Take several shots and compare them to determine which position is best suited for your subject.
With a bit of care and forethought, you can take photos that are worthy of placing in picture frames around your home and office.
