Professional licensed electricians always have one or more pairs of rubber insulating gloves in their tool kit. They know that safety is of the utmost importance when working with electricity, and they take every precaution to ensure that the work they do is performed safely and correctly. However, it is common today for do-it-yourself homeowners to attempt many of their own repairs. Although this approach can potentially save a homeowner some money, it can also be a dangerous proposition if the person performing the repair does not completely understand the job at hand. This can especially be the case when working with electricity. In many cases, electrical repairs and enhancements should be left to professional electricians. However, if you do feel qualified and comfortable to perform certain electrical repairs around the home, it is important that you do what the professionals do, and equip yourself with the proper safety equipment. Rubber insulating gloves are one safety item that you should not be without when working with electricity.

What Are Rubber Insulating Gloves?

The standard gloves worn by electricians are made from non-conductive rubber, which is either made from natural or synthetic materials. These gloves are considered essential to electricians, who customarily work with more than fifty volts of electrical current. The rubber that these gloves are made from has been designed to prevent electrical currents from being conducted through your body, in the event you experience a shock or an arc of electricity. When purchasing these gloves, you will need to know how much electricity you will be working with, since they are rated by the amount of voltage that they can protect against. If gloves are used that are not rated for the amount of electricity you are working with, injury or even death could occur. When these gloves are used, they are worn under another pair of leather gloves. The leather gloves can simply be slipped over the rubber insulating gloves, which are then kept protected. Although electricians are used to working in these gloves, they can often feel uncomfortable or too bulky for the average homeowner. As a result, do-it-yourself homeowners are often tempted to not wear the gloves, especially as they gain more confidence in working with electricity. This can be a form of bad personal judgment that could have dangerous or even deadly consequences.

When Are Rubber Insulating Gloves Used?

Electricians commonly wear insulating gloves whenever they are working with electricity. Because sometimes it only takes the slightest accident to cause electrical shock, they would rather be safe than sorry. However, it is absolutely essential to use rubber insulating gloves whenever you are working with electricity that is greater than fifty volts. In most cases, the average do-it-yourself homeowner should never be working with electricity that is "live," but if this does happen to be the case, then insulating gloves are considered to be absolutely essential to performing the job safely.

Although these gloves can take a bit of getting used to, wearing them should be considered to be an essential part of on-the-job safety when working with electricity.
