The foyer of your house can be tricky to decorate because it doesn't really have a specific purpose like the other rooms in your house. Some people like the foyer's decor to give a bit of a hint of what is to come in the rest of the house. Some things you should consider when deciding how to decorate your foyer are traffic (because you'll get a lot of it there), maintenance (should be easy to maintain), storage (coats, gloves, other outdoor gear), and versatility (furniture that can serve double-duty).

Romantic Foyer

Nothing says romantic more than a vase with fresh flowers on an entry or hall table. Greenery can give your bouquet a more romantic feel.

If you have a mirror hanging in the space, tuck favorite family or vacation photographs into the frame's edge.

Scented candles, changed with the seasons can be handy and lit every once in a while.

If you have a favorite saying or a passage from a book, print it on a nice paper, mat it in a color that's one shade darker than your wall color and hang it in a nice picture frame.

Eclectic Foyer

Paint the walls a bold color that is one that you love.

Group together found objects on a table, such as shells, rocks, and pine cones. Place them all together on an unexpected holder, such as a silver candy dish or a crystal bowl.

Enlarge a favorite photograph, put it in a handsome wooden picture frame and place it on your foyer table or hang it on the wall. You could also frame maps of your favorite places in pale blue or deep green picture frames.

Contemporary Foyer

Frame favorite family photos in similar silver picture frames of different sizes and place on an entry table.

Let a favorite object take center stage on a table or shelf, such as a piece of pottery, a sculpture, or a vase.

Keep artwork simple and select one piece that's important rather than a lot of pieces.

Traditional Foyer

Cover your foyer walls with a historical wallpaper that incorporates your colors.

On a console, cluster family photos, all in black or white or sepia, in old-fashioned picture frames.

Showcase collections such as tea cups, paperweights, or anything you feel passionate about on mahogany shelves. Group the items by color, shape, size, and material for that traditional symmetrical or uniform look.

Utilize wall sconces for attractive foyer lighting. Up lights that light up a plant in the corner can also create the same drama.

Serene Foyer

If you have the space, create a private reading nook with a simple chair and a pile or two of books beside it. You can also place a small bookcase in the foyer with some of your favorite books.

A collection of smooth black stones in a white dish or bowl can create a peaceful contrast on a foyer table.

Line up five identical bud vases on a shelf or table and place a single flower in each one for a serene look.

One photograph or poster or piece of art that moves you, matted and framed in a simple white wooden picture frame, can be placed in the foyer where you'll see it every time you come or go.

So, figure out what style you like and decorate your foyer. You will be so happy that you did!
