Home decorating is a constantly evolving thing, a process that has the potential for being never-ending. Tastes change, styles change, trends change, families change. Finding or editing your personal style and selecting accessories doesn't have to be costly, you just need a little creativity, an open mind, and a few guidelines.
Your home is the center of your life, your headquarters, your universe, your safe place. It's the place you come home to after a long day and you want it to be a comfortable, happy place to relax and enjoy with your family and friends.
Being comfortable at home has even taken on a new meaning in today's lifestyles, with more and more individuals electing to work from home and creating home offices, or even telecommuting to save themselves the stress of the back and forth commuting to and from their workplace. More and more moms are opting to take on the job of full-time at-home moms, and they thereby end up spending the majority of their days inside the home.
For these reasons and many more, people are finding it more and more important to create comfortable living quarters, and that means a bit more than just a new piece of furniture or a couple of new picture frames. Take a look at your room or home decorating project as a whole and determine how your space is used - is your family more formal or laid back? Also, take note of what your preferred styles and colors are. Don't forget to take into consideration kids and pets and plan accordingly.
Personal Style
Most families fall into the "casual" category when you consider the way you like to live in your home and that should have a strong influence on how you decorate your home and what selections you make. Furniture styles vary greatly, too, from very laid back and casual, to traditional and modern - all of these can be "casual" if done right. Flip through some decorating books and/or magazines and find pictures of rooms that you find appealing to you and mark them or photocopy them - tear them out if they are in magazines. You can use these to create a "look book". If you start to see some common decorating threads among the pictures that you select, that could be a great start in determining your style. You might even discover that you prefer a more eclectic look - elements of several different styles in one room.
Your choice of colors is very personal and can speak volumes about your tastes. But don't worry - just because you select a beige tone for your bedroom or any other room doesn't mean that you're boring. It can speak to your desire for a calming influence. Show your dramatic flair with a red-walled dining room, or a wall filled with colorful panoramic picture frames with artwork or family photographs.
Many people - and home decorators and designers - take color cues from your closet, believe it or not. If you are a jeans and t-shirt type, perhaps navy blue would be a shade most comfortable for you. You can take color cues such as this literally, like selecting a denim family sofa, or use it when selecting accents. In the same fashion, if you have a closet that contains soft colors, then you might feel much more comfortable if your rooms can be decorated in similar tones.
Now that you understand some of the ways that you can incorporate your own personal style into your home decorating project, have lots of fun including these ideas into your project. Start small or start big, but get started!
