Decorating a baby's nursery can be a lot of fun. However, it does not have to be an expensive task. Instead of purchasing decorating materials at the store, you can actually make many of them yourself. Not only will this save money, but it will also give the nursery a very personalized look. You will also have a lot of fun making your own decorating accents. Here are a few easy decorating tips that you can use to create the perfectly decorated nursery, even if you do not have a lot of artistic or "crafty" skills.
Easy Wall Decorations
Decorating the nursery walls can be easy and affordable, especially if you plan on doing much of the work yourself. Wallpaper borders can be quite inexpensive, and are easy even for beginners to apply. Or, save even more money by creating a stenciled border around the top edge of the room, or at chair rail height. Using nothing more than a purchased stencil, a stencil brush and some acrylic craft paint, you can add a customized and artistic effect. Or, if you are feeling particularly creative, you could even cut a stencil pattern yourself, using clear acetate sheets. If you need a bit of inspiration, a children's coloring book can help. You can also use a baby quilt to decorate a wall. Simply attach a quilt rack bar to the wall, and hang a pretty quilt. Displaying art prints, paintings or even some of your own drawings in silver picture frames on the nursery walls is another way to add extra visual interest. In fact, if you have older children, have them make some of their own drawings to add to the nursery decor. Not only is this a great way to get older children involved, but they will also be quite proud to see their own artwork displayed in picture frames.
Simple Window Treatments
Cute window treatments can add a very attractive look to the nursery. Although you can certainly purchase curtains, drapes or blinds, you can often save a considerable amount of money by sewing your own curtains. You can either purchase fabric, or use a flat sheet. Purchasing a baby sheet that matches the rest of the nursery's bedding can be a great way to achieve a coordinated look. For each window, sew two curtain panels, each as wide as the total window width so that the curtains will be nice and full. When cutting each panel, add about six inches to the length and about two inches to the width, to allow for hemming and the top curtain rod pocket. Sew a narrow hem on the right and left sides of each panel. Then, sew a deeper hem on the bottom so that the curtains will hang nicely. Along the top edge, fold the fabric over twice to form a pocket deep enough to hold the curtain rod. Sew horizontally along the bottom and top of the folded edges, forming the curtain rod pocket. Then, simply insert a curtain rod through both top pockets, and hang.
Baby Photos
Of course, no nursery is complete without a few framed baby photos. Place a couple of your favorite photos in cute baby picture frames, and display them around the room on shelves, table tops or walls. Or, create a collage of photos to frame and hang on the wall.
So don't be overwhelmed when you get to thinking about decorating your baby's nursery, as there are many easy and creative ways to make the room look great.
