Hobbies can certainly be a lot of fun, but they can also create an incredible amount of mess and clutter. Crafts, collections, how-to books and other hobby paraphernalia can quickly take over your home, unless you have a good storage and organization strategy. If you are starting to feel the crunch of too many hobby supplies, here are some tips you can use to get "hobby clutter" firmly under control.
Storage is Key
Proper storage containers and techniques are crucial when it comes to keeping hobby supplies organized. Fortunately, there are storage options available that can be used for almost anything you need to organize. In some cases you will be able to purchase containers that are specifically designed for certain hobby items, such as albums for stamps, paper storage containers for scrapbooking, or compartmentalized organizers for beads and other small craft supplies. When choosing a container to use for storage, give some thought as to the size you need, as well as what features would be most useful to you. For example, if you work on your scrapbooking hobby exclusively in your craft room, a large storage armoire could be the perfect option. However, if you frequently attend scrapbooking events or "cropping parties," a more portable storage solution would be a better choice. In order for a storage solution to be successful, it has to be easy to use and well suited to your needs.
Don't Store What You Can Display
It does not make good sense to store things that you can easily display. For example, if you collect post cards, displaying them in picture frames can be a great way to enjoy some of them. Or, if you enjoy looking at your collectibles but do not like to leave them out on public display, try taking digital photos of them. Once you have a collection of photos that you like, you can upload them to a digital photo frame designed to cycle through all of them, which you can then display on a shelf. If you collect seashells, use some to create beautiful crafts that you can use to decorate your home. Picture frames can also be useful for photo collections, sports card collections, stamp collections, and more.
Designing Effective Work Areas
Sometimes hobbies produce too much clutter simply because you do not have an effective work area. If you are lucky enough to have a spare room that you can devote to your hobby, you will be able to set up a work space or table that will give you plenty of space in which to work. You might be surprised how much more enjoyable your hobby is when you no longer have to put things away every time the family needs to use the dining room table. Organizer bins, filing cabinets, storage boxes and wall shelves can all be useful for keeping supplies neatly under control. Also, if your hobby tends to be a bit on the messy side, be sure to protect the floor and table surfaces if necessary in order to prevent unnecessary damage, and keep a trash can nearby.
