Paper craft projects are an easy, inexpensive and enjoyable way to spend some quality time together with your kids. In many cases, all you need is some scrap paper and a few accessories, so essentially your art supplies are practically free. Regardless of the age of your child, it can be easy to find a craft project that they will enjoy making. Here are some simple paper craft projects that you can use to get started.
Paper Bead Necklaces
These beads are so simple and safe to make that even small children can help make them. All you need is some scrap paper, such as construction or scrapbook paper, a lollipop stick or piece of small dowel rod, a ruler, a pair of scissors and some tacky craft glue. If small children will be making these beads, you might want to cut a good supply of paper triangles for them to use in advance. To make the beads, use a ruler to create a triangle template on a piece of stiff cardstock. The width of the triangle's base will be equal to the length of the bead. Draw triangle shapes on the reverse side of your paper, using the template as a guide. Then, cut out the triangles. Starting at the wide base of the triangle, roll the triangle paper piece around the lollipop stick. Apply a small amount of glue to the tip of the triangle, and press in place to form the bead shape. Hold in place for a minute or two then remove the bead from the stick and place on a piece of aluminum foil or waxed paper to dry. Once the glue is dry, you can string the beads onto cord to form necklaces or bracelets.
Paper Snowflake Crafts
Making snowflakes out of paper is a classic craft that children always seem to enjoy. To create a snowflake, cut a large square out of inexpensive white printer or copier paper. Fold the square in half vertically then fold in half again horizontally. Make one last fold diagonally to form a triangular shape. Use scissors to make small cuts along the long edges of the triangles. Then cut a decorative edge along the short end of the triangle, which will become the outer edge of your snowflake. When finished, unfold the snowflake carefully. You can use these snowflakes to decorate your windows during the winter months. Or, create interesting wall art by placing one or more in white square picture frames and display on your wall.
Origami Crafts
The Oriental paper folding craft known as Origami can be a lot of fun, especially for children who are a little older. Look online or in bookstores to find simple instructions for making these interesting paper crafts. Depending on the project you choose, you could end up with a three dimensional folded piece of art to display on a shelf, or flat folded pieces suitable for placing in 8x10 picture frames. Either way, it's a great way of creating beautiful art from simple pieces of paper.
