If you're like most families, chances are you have a huge collection of both printed and non-printed digital photos. Although digital cameras are wonderful things, they can also be the source of a lot of photo clutter around the home. Once you've taken a photo, it can be very difficult to simply delete it. Even if you have other photos that are similar or which feature a slightly better pose, it can be heart-wrenching to simply delete the spares. If you have a box or CD of extra photos sitting around, why not put them to good use? There are plenty of fun crafts you can make with old photos, such as a fun family photo collage.
Choosing Your Photos
In most cases, you won't have any problems finding a wide variety of photos to use for your collage. If anything, the difficult part might be deciding between the many photos you have to choose from. Part of the beauty of digital photos is the ability to easily print multiple copies. So, if more than one family member decides he or she wants a particular photo, simply print more copies. In some cases, you might find that having your chosen photos printed at your neighborhood department store is cheaper than buying the paper and ink cartridges to print them yourself.
Deciding on the overall theme of your photo collage is the first step towards selecting your photos. For example, you might want to create a holiday collage made up of photos from holidays past. These collages can look great when displayed in picture frames along with the rest of your holiday home décor. Vacation photos, baby photos, or school photos can also work great for themed collages.
Preparing Your Work Space
Once you've selected a nice variety of photos, it's time to get down to business. Unless you want to risk getting adhesive or scratches on your dining room or kitchen table, the first step should be protecting its surface. An old vinyl tablecloth can work especially well for this purpose. You should also gather up all the supplies your family will need to create their photo collages so there's not a lot of running around at the last minute. Child-safe scissors, rulers, photo-safe glue and double sided tape can all come in handy for this project. If you have some leftover scrapbook materials such as paper scraps or embellishments, this project is also a good way to use them.
Creating The Collage
Once you have your table surface protected and your craft materials gathered, it's time to have some fun. Give everyone a sturdy piece of poster board or heavy cardstock to use as a base. Since everyone will likely have his or her own idea of what defines "beautiful photo collage art," try not to offer too much creative advice to other family members. Instead, simply focus on your artistic creation and let everyone else do his or her own thing. When you're done, you'll have a variety of different photo collages created, many of which will be perfect for displaying as art in picture frames around your home.
So get started today on your family photo collage. Use these simple hints and you can't go wrong.
