Ready-made frames are just what their name implies - they are pre-built picture frames that are ready to house your artwork, mats, glass, and other framing material. For decades, ready-made frames have been available in a somewhat limited range of styles and sizes. In recent years, however, the inventory of ready-made frames has greatly expanded and the selection both in stores and online is extensive.

These frames are typically made of wood, metal, plastic or a composite resin and the quality can range from extremely cheap to high quality.

Some people feel that the carpentry skills and specialized equipment needed to do professional quality framing is an important part of framing artwork and prefer to go that route rather than do-it-yourself picture framing. For many others, the ability to produce quality, attractive gallery picture frames utilizing ready-made frames is an essential part of the appeal.

Standard Picture Frame Sizes

Ready-made picture frames come in a good variety of standard sizes, which are primarily based on the most common photograph sizes. Most popular are the 4x6, 5x 7, 8 x 10, 11 x 14, and 16 x 20 sizes. Remember, the size stated on the frame refers to the size of the glass, artwork and other material that it will hold.

Some other ready made sized frames also include: 2x3, 3x3, 3.5x5, 4x5, 5x5, 6x8, 8x8, 8.5x11, 8x12, 10x10, 12x12, 18x24, 20x24, 22x28, 24x30 and 24x36.

Photo frames come in a large variety of styles and colors, from ornate traditional picture frames to sleek modern frames and many playful and even whimsical frames, such as colorful flower picture frames. They can be made of metal, wood, resin, plastic, glass and other materials. Ready-made frames come with glass to protect your pictures and many of the smaller size frames also come with an easel back - an extendable leg that allows the frame to stand on a table or other surface. Some frames, depending on their construction, may or may not be able to hang on a wall.

Clip frames simply hold your photos or artwork in between two pieces of glass or plastic. Some also include a firm backing board. This type of frame is made to hang on a wall.

There are also multi opening picture frames such as double picture frames, triple frames and collage picture frames. All of these are designed to hold multiple pictures in a single frame and are a great option for when displaying a lot of pictures. Multi opening frames are also a great way to frame a lot of pictures on a budget.

You can easily find ready-made picture frames, even up to poster size, that come in complete packages that include the frame, mat, and glass. These frames are fast and convenient and look nice.

Picture frames serve a useful purpose and can play an important role in your home's decor. Grouped on a tabletop or scattered about a bookcase, an assortment of coordinated picture frames can add interest and warmth to a room.
