On days when the weather is bad, children can get rather bored and restless. In fact, you might even find that you get a little bored yourself. If you are stuck indoors, it can be fun to have a family day by planning a few quick craft projects. Even if you do not have a lot of art materials in the house, many times you can find everything you need in your kitchen cabinet. If you have a bag of un-popped popcorn, you will have enough supplies to entertain both you and your child for the entire afternoon. Here are some great ideas for quick and easy crafts using popcorn.
Bean Bags
Although they are not really called "corn bags," popcorn can easily be used as a substitute for beans when sewing these fun little bags. In fact, because the kernels are smaller than beans, they can actually be easier to use. Get a few fabric scraps and sew them into small bags. If you are feeling creative, you could make them in custom shapes, such as animals or cars. But, to keep things simple, just sew together a couple simple squares, leaving about two inches open on one side. Be sure to put the right sides of the fabric together before sewing, so that you can flip them before filling. Once you have the bags sewed, fill a large bowl with popcorn kernels. Your children can then fill the bags with the popcorn. Using a funnel can make this job easier. Fill the bag approximately two thirds full then sew the opening shut. You can then organize a few fun games that can be played indoors, such as a contest to see who can toss the most bags in a box or bucket. Or, play a tossing game such as "Hot Potato" with the bags. Take a few photos of your children playing, since these action photos are priceless when displayed in picture frames.
Mosaic Art
If you have several colors of popcorn, you can create mosaic art. Give your child a square of lightweight cardboard, such as a piece of poster board. They can draw simple designs on the cardboard as a guide for applying the popcorn. Cover each section of the drawing with white glue. Then apply the popcorn to the wet glue. Continue gluing different colors of popcorn until the design is filled. After drying, you could even place a few of these mosaics in picture frames, displaying them on the wall. Or, use the mosaics as attractive trivets.
Popcorn Garlands And Necklaces
Stringing popcorn can be a lot of fun, even when it is not the holiday season. Pop a large bowl of popcorn. Then give each child a yarn needle threaded with quilting thread or lightweight string. They can then string the popped kernels, alternating with dry cereal rings if desired for variety. The garlands can be hung around the house in a decorative fashion. Or, create shorter strands, knotting the ends together to create popcorn necklaces. Take a few photos of your children decked out in their popcorn jewelry creations, and display in picture frames.
So if you're running out of fun ideas on a rainy day, then don't worry. Your kids will love expressing themselves with these fun and artistic popcorn crafts.
