Teaching your child about the joys of reading can be one of the most important things you can do for them. Too many times, children look at reading as simply something they need to do in order to do well in school. When a child has this attitude, they risk missing out on the many advantages of reading simply for the fun of it. When a child enjoys reading, they tend to read books on their own, even if they are not assigned in school. As a result, their reading skills naturally improve. However, reading for the sheer fun of it also has many other advantages, besides simply doing well in school. Because reading is such an important part of a person's everyday life, it just stands to reason that good reading skills will make almost every part of a person's life just a little easier and more productive. One of the best ways to instill a love of reading in your child is to enjoy reading as a family.

Read to Your Child

Learning a healthy love of reading should start early, even if your child is still too young to read. Even when a child is still a baby, you can soothe or entertain them by reading a book to them. Choose books that have plenty of colorful pictures, so that your child will be more interested. As they get a little older, let them choose the book that will be read. If your child has a few favorite books, you can encourage their interest even more by using the book's theme to decorate their room. Placing pictures of their favorite characters in picture frames can be a simple and yet inexpensive way to get your child more excited about books.

Encouraging Young Readers

If your child is just starting to learn to read, it is important to encourage them in every way possible. Children often love to read to their parents. This can be a great way to help them increase their reading skills, while sharing some quality time together. Planning a regularly scheduled trip to the library with your child is also a great way to help them get excited about reading. You could also encourage them to draw pictures of their favorite stories from the books they choose. You can then display some of their drawings in picture frames around the house.

Family Reading Hour

After your children are reading on their own, it is still important to encourage their love of reading. Setting aside an hour on a regular basis so that everyone can enjoy a good book is an excellent way to set a good example. When your children see how important reading is to you, they will naturally place more importance on reading in their own lives. You could create a family library, stocking it with books that the whole family can enjoy. Decorating the library with book-related artwork displayed in picture frames can also be a great way to add a bit of fun and visual interest.

So, take a trip to your local library or book store and choose some books that you can all enjoy. You will never regret that you did!
