If you are looking for a great way to teach your family about the importance of taking care of the environment, a family recycling project might be just the activity you need. Recycling is a great way to reduce the amount of trash that ends up in landfills, plus in some cases it can even earn you a little bit of extra spending money. Starting a recycling project as a family is a great way to work together to help conserve natural resources and improve our planet's environment. Here are some tips you can use to help get your recycling project started today.

The Planning Process

If you have never recycled before, it can be helpful to do a bit of planning in advance. Give some thought as to what kind of trash is generated most frequently by your family. For example, recycling aluminum cans might be a good place to start if you frequently purchase canned soda and juices. It is often easier to "start small" when implementing a family recycling project. Then, once your family becomes accustomed to the concept of recycling, you can always start collecting other items as well. Choose an area in your home that can serve as your recycling center. Good choices include a corner of the basement or the garage. If your community offers curbside recycling, contact the proper city authorities in order to obtain a recycling container if they are provided. Otherwise, a large plastic or metal trash can or even a cardboard box can suffice. Follow your community's guidelines for collecting recyclable containers. If you are using your own container to collect the items, it can be easier to take them to the recycling center if you first line them with a large trash bag. You'll want to make sure everyone knows to rinse out cans and bottles before placing them in the recycling collection containers, so that you don't inadvertently attract insects and small animals.

Set a Goal

Since projects always seem to be more successful when there is a goal in mind, it can be a good idea to define your recycling project objectives in advance. If you are planning to try to earn a bit of spending money by recycling, you will probably want to focus on items that you can get money back from, such as aluminum cans. If you plan to spend your recycling proceeds on a specific item, such as a night out at the movies, it can be helpful to remind family members of this goal. For example, a picture of your local movie theater or photos of a previous family movie night hung in a picture frame over your recycling center can be a good motivator.

Achieving Success

In order to achieve your recycling goal, you might have to work a bit to learn new trash management habits. Try creating a bit of excitement by holding a few family recycling competition events. For example, bestow the honor of "Best Recycler" to the family member who recycles the most cans during the week. You could even hang 4x6 picture frames nearby so that you can prominently display photos of the winners of this award.

So if you are hoping to organize a recycling project for your family, then look no more. With these tips you can get started right away.
