Sometimes it can seem like an endless battle to get children to keep their rooms clean. Many young children as well as teenagers just seem to have a problem keeping their rooms organized. If you are searching for ways to inspire your child to keep his or her room neat and tidy, here are some tips you can use that could help.
Assessing the Problem
Instead of just jumping to the conclusion that your child simply is not trying to keep his or her room clean, it can be helpful to carefully examine the situation. Especially in the case of young children, sometimes you may find that closet shelves, furniture drawers and other storage facilities simply are not easy for them to access. Other times a child may not have enough storage space, or at least appropriate storage space, for their belongings. For example, a teenage girl may need more closet space to hang her expanding wardrobe. In other cases, your child may have little need for clothes storage space, but might need additional storage capabilities for hobby or sports supplies and equipment. Understanding what your child needs to store will help you better optimize the closet and storage space in their room.
Maximizing Storage Space
Once you understand the problem, you can often find a relatively simple and inexpensive solution. Removing the closet shelf and replacing it with a second clothes rod can essentially double the closet's clothing storage space. Over-the-door shoe organizers are also a great way to reduce closet clutter. Replacing a short bookshelf with a full height one is also a good way to effortlessly increase a room's storage space. By placing colorful boxes and bins on the shelves, your child will have additional storage space they can utilize. For smaller children, low shelves are often more convenient for toy storage than a toy box. Beds with drawers underneath are also a great way to maximize a room's available storage space. In some cases, you can turn clutter into wall art. For example, if your child has a pile of drawings cluttering their desk surface, provide them with some 8x10 picture frames so that they can display them on their walls.
Helping Your Child Clean Up
If your child's room is currently a mess, they may be a bit overwhelmed when you ask them to clean it up. For young children, try making a game out of it. You can take turns putting items away, or count the number of toys they pick up. Older children and teenagers can often get excited about cleaning their room if you approach it as though it were a "room makeover." Allow them to choose some new room accessories as part of the process, such as a new organization unit, desk accessories, or a few simple black picture frames to display artwork on their walls. Once their room is cleaned up and they have some new drawers and shelves available, you might be surprised how much easier it will be to get them to keep their room neat and tidy.
By helping your children learn how to clean up after themselves while their young, you'll not only teach them responsibility but give them a life skill that will help them throughout their life.
