More than ever before, families tend to spread themselves far and wide across the country, and sometimes around the world! A lot of families end up relocating (due to their work or for other reasons) a long way from their extended family members - including grandparents and others that are important to their family circle. But thanks to modern technology, your kids aren't left with just the memory of Grandma in the photo albums on your coffee table. Keeping in touch has never been easier.
Communicating Electronically
The advances that have been made in electronic communication open up the doors for staying in touch with long-distance grannies and grandpas. Email is now so simple that even a five-year-old can do it. And that's a good thing, since even the most technologically-challenged grandparent can learn how to message back-and-forth via email. If the grandparent in question is a bit computer-shy, you can invariably spring for a basic computer or laptop and teach them how to use it in an hour or so. There are also classes offered for just this sort of need at most local community colleges and community centers - many of them for free or at a very low cost. After Grandma has seen a few photographs of the kids on her computer, she will typically be encouraged to learn what she must to keep the photos coming.
Staying In Touch Across The Miles
Other ways that Grandma can use and enjoy technology to stay in touch from her home across the country include:
• Printing digital photographs from home. Grandma will be able to fill up several photo albums a year without heading out to the photo center if she has the right printer and photo paper.
• Using Skype or other internet phone services. If both you and Grandma have a Skype account, you can talk for free, Skype-to-Skype. There are also low-cost phone plans that allow you to call land lines and cell phones.
• Taking advantage of cell phone features. Many cell phone plans feature unlimited calling after a particular time, such as after six p.m. and on the weekends. They can use this free time to communicate with the family.
• Joining social networks. Sites like FaceBook.com and Twitter.com as well as other social networking sites allow family members to stay in contact with one another, share photos, write status updates, and more.
• Creating online photo albums. Visit Flickr.com and other photo-sharing websites to create online photo albums that can be shared with family and friends. This is a great way to share milestone events instantly with grandma and others, or you can upload and share vacation and school pictures without the long wait for snail mail.
• Using a web camera to chat in real-time. Using services like Yahoo Messenger, you and your absent grandparent can talk face to face - for free! Web cameras are easy to use, very affordable and many of them take still shots as well that can be used for making prints.
These are just a few of the ways that you can stay in touch with your loved ones over the miles that separate you - there are invariably many others that can make you feel like your grandma, grandpa or other relative is just right around the corner.
