If you are like most families, you probably have hundreds of family photos stuffed into boxes, drawers and albums. You might even have a plan or a few good ideas on how you would like to get these photos organized one day. However, it is easy to procrastinate getting started on this job, especially since in most cases it requires a fair amount of time and work. If getting your family photos organized is on your "to do" list, here are some tips you can use to help get the job done right.
Plan for Protection
Preserving your photos and protecting them from potential damage should be the first order of business. In some cases, even photos that are stored in albums are at risk of becoming damaged. For example, many older style "magnetic" photo albums can cause photos to stick, resulting in damage over time. If you have your photos stored in albums that are made from paper that is not acid-free, they could also be at risk for damage. Photos that are simply stored in boxes could become bent, torn or damaged in some way. Although you might not worry too much if the photos are simply prints of digital files you have carefully stored, damage can be a catastrophic problem for vintage photos. In some cases, you might not even have the negatives for some of your photos. If they become damaged irreparably, you could even lose a photo permanently. Before this happens, you should plan for safe photo storage. Specially designed photo storage boxes, albums made from acid-free materials, and scrapbooks are all good solutions for keeping photos safe. Of course, you might also have a desire to display some of your favorite photos, even if you want to keep the originals stored with the rest of your archived photos. You can print and display even vintage photos in picture frames if you simply scan them and print a copy. In some cases, you will even be able to improve upon the original by using a graphics program to repair visible tears, stains and creases.
Creating the Perfect Photo Album
Although there probably really is not any such thing as the "perfect photo album," there are album designs that can be perfect for a specific need you have in mind. For example, you might have a desire to sort your photos by date, subject matter or other personal preference. As long as the sorting method works for you, there is nothing wrong with it. If your photos are currently shoved into boxes without any semblance of order, it might take a bit of time and effort to get them all sorted out. Dedicating a clean table and a weekend of your time to the project can often get the job done. Once they are sorted, count the photos and calculate how many photo albums or scrapbooks you will need to house them all. If you cannot afford to purchase these albums all at once, set a goal of purchasing and completing one album every month, or whatever schedule fits both your time schedule and your budget. As you are sorting your photos, you will probably find some favorite shots that you have not seen in years. Displaying these favorites in picture frames can be a great way of enjoying them all over again.
