Creating family time capsules is a fun activity that everyone can enjoy. It is a fun thing to do on holidays and special occasions, but it can also be a great way to add a bit of everyday fun to your family life. It can be a lot of fun to fill your family time capsule with items that are relevant to a specific event or time period. However, it can also be fun to work with other themes as well. After a designated amount of time, you can open the capsule back up, and have fun seeing what is inside. Here are some ideas you can use to get started making your own family time capsule.

Event-Based Time Capsules

Yearly events such as holidays and birthdays naturally lend themselves to the creation of family time capsules. In fact, some families make a yearly tradition out of creating a yearly time capsule, as well as opening and reviewing the time capsule that they made the previous year. For example, for a child's birthday, you could add photos from the party, a list of gifts received, a few party favors, or any other relevant items to the capsule. You can use a plastic bin, a cardboard box, or any other container that is sized appropriately to serve as a time capsule. When the next birthday comes around, open the previous year's capsule and have fun seeing what you saved. As an added bonus, you can put some of the photos you had stored inside in collage picture frames and display them around your home as a reminder of the fun event. Then, create a new time capsule from this year's birthday memories so that you have something to open next year.

Everyday Time Capsules

Of course, you do not really need to wait until a special occasion to create a family time capsule. Creating one can be a fun way for children to spend an afternoon, even if it is not a special date or event. Let everyone in the family find items that they would like to place in the capsule. Things that reference the actual date can be fun to look back on, such as a magazine, a newspaper, or even the box from the cereal you ate for breakfast that morning. Although these everyday items are quite common in nature, they can be fun to look back on a year or more into the future. Then, one day when everyone is looking for something fun to do, you can bring out an old family time capsule, and open it up. Looking at the old photos, newspapers, toys, and other items that were stored inside can be a lot of fun. In fact, if you save a capsule long enough, opening it can be a truly nostalgic experience. After opening a time capsule, it can be fun to place a few of the items from inside in great shadow box picture frames to display around your home, as a reminder of how much fun your family had creating and then opening your box of preserved memories.
