Sometimes making over a room can involve taking ten minutes to change something or add something. Use what you already have or something that is readily available that is inexpensive and use it in a stylish, perhaps even original and unexpected, way. Here are some tips for decorating your walls.
Many people hang original artwork in a prominent place for guests to view them. Try hanging original artwork instead in the bedroom or less formal area of your home where it can be enjoyed by those who are living there. A large blank wall in a bedroom is a perfect place to hang a large piece of art.
Picture frames are a great way to fill a wall space. How they are placed is another matter - their placement or arrangement can convey a formal feeling or an informal feeling. When arranging a grouping of picture frames, maintaining balance is the key factor.
Break up a pattern with a different shape - sneak in a simple oval picture frame amongst a grouping of frames with all straight lines.
Group four frames of the same size together (two on top of two), with a fifth larger frame hung off to one side; an arrangement like this can create a necessary balance next to a table with a large lamp.
If you're looking for a very non-traditional way to hang some small picture frames on the wall, hang them in a row underneath larger framed artwork. Again, like above, a lamp on a table can provide necessary balance where another picture frame may have ordinarily been hung.
Create a focal point by hanging unusually shaped frames together on a wall. A collection can include classic oval picture frames, vintage round picture frames, and more shapes. The frames should all be made of similar materials and contain like subject matter to keep the arrangement cohesive.
Hang cherished trinkets or cards on the wall. Rather than storing away items that you do not want to live without, frame them and display them. Sometimes these types of framed objects would be great for a bathroom or bedroom, where you will see them a lot and they can give you a feeling of comfort or security.
Hang colorful, oversized prints in a small or a monochrome setting for an unexpected pop. A bright print in a small, subtly colored bathroom can give the room a dramatic focus and weight that it might need; the same goes for any other monochrome room.
Hang decorative objects between shelves, like on a column between two sets of shelves. Sometimes the walls or shelves are monotonous enough - hanging something between the shelves is an unexpected surprise.
Fill an entire space with a piece of art, such as the space between the top of a door jamb and the ceiling. Perhaps a three-dimensional carved wood piece of art is just the thing to put over a kitchen doorway where it would be the perfect companion to adorn an empty spot that's shouting to be livened up.
Attach a coat rack to a wall and create an unusual grouping on that wall. A coat rack doesn't only have to be used for coats - hang coats, hats, scarves and even assorted keepsakes for a luxurious touch of whimsy. Add to the visual with one or two or three wall hangings off to the side and above the coat rack, perhaps even a plaque with a fun saying.
Now that you have some excellent ideas for ways that you can decorate your walls, have some fun and get to work!
