Caring for and Preserving Photographs
Care in handling and storage of cherished or vintage photographs is essential to preserving your valuable photo memories.
To minimize damage from harsh light, rotate framed photographs once or twice a year that are exposed to sunlight and create new arrangements with your picture frames.
Photos that are seldom viewed should be stored flat in sturdy archival boxes. Layer acid-free tissue or museum-quality matte board between the images for added protection.
Where sunlight is unavoidable, use today's scanning technology to create duplicates of your cherished photographs for displaying while the originals are stored away safely.
Photographs that aren't displayed in frames can be displayed in albums with acid-free pages and photo corners that hold the images without adhesives. Be aware that most photo albums made through the 1960s were made with highly acidic paper; photos stored in these types of albums should be removed and placed in an archival-quality album.
Sunlight is the greatest threat to photographs, so if you plan to frame your original photographs, make sure you place them under glass or Plexiglas that has a good layer of protection from Uv rays. As mentioned above, if exposed to sunlight, rotate where it's hung so that it is not constantly exposed to damaging sun rays.
Arranging Photographs on a Wall
Some people find it difficult to create an attractive wall display when hanging several pieces, but following a few simple guidelines make creating attractive displays easy. These techniques can be used when hanging artwork, photographs, paintings, or drawings - or anything that can be placed in a picture frame.
Gather together all of the pieces you want to hang, then lay them out on a flat surface. Move and switch them around until you create an arrangement that you like. For best results, and also to make it a little easier, work your arrangement within a geometric frame (triangle, rectangle, circle, square, etc.) as this will help keep groupings from looking too plain or rigid. Your arrangement must be balanced and you can accomplish this by making sure to place larger pieces opposite groups of smaller pieces. It's okay to have arrangements that include different sizes of frames, but the frames should all go together like having them be all different types of silver metal picture frames. If the artwork you are hanging has different sized mats, hanging them in rows will unify the look.
Selecting Art for Your SpaceTips For Selecting Art for Your Space
If you don't already have art for your walls and you're looking for artwork to hang, consider textiles. A nice tapestry can hang gracefully above a table or buffet and can provide a nice mix of color, pattern, and texture.
If your room has built-in wall cubbies, select objects that have curvy shapes for added interest, rather than competing with the strong, architectural lines of the cubby.
If you are displaying an object on a pedestal, an effective way to make the displayed object a part of an overall arrangement, rather than something that distracts the eye, is to hang framed prints low on the wall behind or beside the pedestal.
