If you have a spare bedroom or guest room that gets very little use, perhaps it is time to give it a total makeover. Instead of wasting the space, why not transform it into a game room that the entire family can enjoy? Many times this can be accomplished on a minimal budget with very little effort. All you need is an unused room, a few decorating materials, and plenty of games. Here are a few easy ways to transform unused space into a game room in your own home.
Assessing the Room
The first step towards making a game room is carefully examining the room. If you already have furniture in the room, you will need to give some thought as to what to do with it. In some cases, you might be able to re-purpose the bedroom furniture items so that you can continue to utilize them in your new game room. However, some furniture pieces will probably need to be removed entirely, such as the bed itself. In some cases, you might want to simply store these items in case you need them in the future. You could also donate them to charity or even sell them in a garage sale or on an online auction site. Once the room is cleared out, examine the walls and the floor. If the room could use a fresh coat of paint, it can be easier to get the job done before you start adding new furniture to the room. Adding a colorful coat of paint can really help to transform an old bedroom into a fun new game room.
Great Furniture Pieces for Game Rooms
Although the furniture pieces you include will naturally be somewhat dependent upon the kinds of games you plan to play, there are a few items that are universally useful. A nice sturdy table and chair set, large enough for your whole family to sit at, is often an indispensable addition to the game room. Tables are quite useful for card games or board games. However, if you plan to play mostly video games in the room, then you might want to focus on a television set, entertainment center, and comfortable seating pieces such as chairs, a small sofa, or a loveseat. If there is a hardwood or tile floor in the room, adding an area rug can make sitting on the floor to play games a more comfortable experience.
Game Room Decorating Tips
Decorating a family game room can be a lot of fun. Family photos placed in wood picture frames can serve as wall art. Or, try mounting old wooden game boards directly to the walls to add a decorative touch. There are also wallpaper patterns available which feature a game room theme. You can create an interesting chair rail border around the perimeter of the room by using simple playing cards, placed end to end. Simply attach them to the wall using wallpaper border paste. You can also use antique picture frames to display game instructions, vintage game board boxes, or other game-related materials as wall art.
