Buying gifts for friends and family members can be a lot of fun. However, buying gifts does not have to be an expensive activity. It is important to remember that the old saying "It's the thought that counts" really is true. There are many different ways to keep your gift-giving purchases within your budget, such as buying items that are on sale, shopping during the off-season, or even making handcrafted gifts. You might just find that a few of these budget gift-giving tips will make purchasing presents more meaningful as well as more enjoyable.

Set a Budget

One mistake that many people make when purchasing gifts is simply not sticking to their budget. Although you might be tempted to go overboard and splurge on an expensive gift, in the end it is better to only buy items that you know you can truly afford. Decide how much you can reasonably spend on your gift and then stick to that amount.

Shop Smart

Finding gifts for budget prices is more difficult if you wait until the last minute to shop. Instead, try to plan ahead, so that you can take advantage of sales. Stores often have clearance sales which allow you to buy great gifts for low prices. In fact, if you make a habit of shopping after holidays or "end of season" sales, you will be able to find even more bargains. This is a great way of being able to give great gifts without spending a lot of money. Getting into the habit of always keeping a small "stash" of items on hand for when you need a last-minute gift is also a great idea. Small items such as pretty colored enamel picture frames or candles work well for this. Using this method, you will be less likely to overspend when you need a small gift in a hurry.

Handcrafted Gifts

Making your own gifts is another way of saving money. However, a gift that you make yourself also tends to be more personalized than anything you could buy at a store. For this reason, handmade gifts can seem extra-special to the person who receives one. Depending on your creativity and artistic talents, there are almost an endless number of gifts you can make. Woodcrafts, hand-knitted items, or food gifts made from your own kitchen are all excellent possibilities. However, if you do not have any particular crafting, artistic or cooking talents, do not despair. There still plenty of gifts you can make on your own that require little to no creativity. Gift baskets made up of small inexpensive items you purchase at a store are always a welcome gift. This can work especially well if you create a "theme" basket, such as combining a ceramic mug, a few packets of hot cocoa mix and a bag of freshly ground coffee. If you have a few great photos that you know the recipient will love, place them in collage picture frames and give as a thoughtful gift. You'll save money while also giving a gift that is sure to be appreciated and enjoyed.
