Many people have different ways that they prefer to hang pictures and you'll find a lot of tips and suggestions everywhere. Nothing is set in stone, but here are 10 rules for hanging picture frames.

1. Use candle wax on threads to act as a lubricant and to prevent the screw from breaking when you screw it into the frame.

2. Hang frames using D-rings or screw eyes that are positioned one quarter of the way down from the top of the frame on both sides. Make sure you drill small pilot holes first to avoid the potential of the frame splitting, and avoid drilling the pilot holes too close to the edges. Also, if your frame has a sloped or uneven molding, make sure to position the pilot holes in the deepest part of the wood.

3. Always make sure that whichever hanging method you decide to use, it is strong enough to handle the weight of the frame to be hung. Most nails and picture hanging fixtures and fittings come with a specific weight rating to help guide you, so make sure you know at least the approximate weight of the frame or frames you will be hanging.

4. To ensure the safety of your artwork - so that it doesn't fall off the wall to its demise - don't use regular garden twine or cotton thread because they can break easily; use only picture cord or picture wire. Some people also prefer to use chain, but it's not nearly as common.

5. If you decide to use cord instead of wire, tie the cord with a reef knot so that the knot is self tightening. First, thread the cord through each ring, and then secure it with a reef knot. Tying a reef knot is easy - right over left and under, then left over right and under.

6. If you opt for using picture wire, simply double loop the wire through the D ring or screw eye and then wrap it around itself toward the middle of the frame to secure it.

7. You can purchase X hooks that come with matching nails; these are the best to use in softer walls. The larger X hooks combined with wall anchors are more suitable for hard walls.

8. Once you have attached the picture wire or cord to the back of your picture frame, test its strength by holding your picture by the cord. Make sure you are holding the cord about six inches above the floor - you wouldn't want the wire or cord to fail, leaving your treasured antique picture frames free-falling to the floor!

9. When deciding the positioning of the wall hook that will hold your artwork, remember that the most pleasing way to view artwork is at eye level so make sure that's where it hangs.

10. To keep the picture away from the wall, use two slices of cork or other soft material on the two bottom corners of the picture frame.

By using these tips you should be able to hand just about any picture frame beautifully on the wall so that it looks like a pro came in and hung all your picture frames.
