If you want to choose the best picture frame for your photo, you need to learn the difference between a "ready-made" frame and a "custom" picture frame. This may seem like an easy thing to do, but there are differences to consider that may save you a significant amount of money.

Ready-made picture frames are frames that are manufactured, assembled and packaged in a factory. They are designed for retail sales. Ready-made frames come with glass covers, backing and built-in framing hardware and are designed for either a tabletop or wall display. They're available in a wide variety of standard picture sizes and are sold online or at retail, photography, or framing stores.

Custom picture frames, on the other hand, are specially made to your specifications to fit your photograph or artwork. If you have an odd, non-standard sized piece a custom photo frame is what you need. They are usually used to frame art work, such as oil paintings or watercolors, poster size prints or enlarged photos. Custom picture frames give you the flexibility of choosing a specific type molding and can be assembled for you by a framer.

With custom picture frames you have the option of using standard clear glass, or other types of surfaces like acrylic or UV glass. You can also choose the type of hardware - backing or bracket for a wall frame. A framer will assemble your picture in the custom frame and you will receive it ready to hang on your wall. Some framers consider this convenience as a ready-made frame, but this is really a custom made picture frame. Since custom made frames are more expensive than ready-made frames, you are wise to be aware of the difference so you know what you are spending and why.

When would you want a custom frame over a ready-made frame?

Because of the non-standard size of most custom artwork, a custom frame may be your only option for hanging your artwork on the wall. Custom picture frames can be made to accommodate the measurements of any artwork. And remember, that custom frames do require extra time and money to produce a finished framed piece.

A ready-made frame makes a special gift for anyone who likes to display their favorite photos on a desktop, dresser or hung on a wall. Ready-made frames are very popular because of their versatility. Many ready-made frames include hanging hardware and an easel back stand that allows you to display them on a flat surface either vertically or horizontally. They are available in a variety of materials, finishes, colors, styles, themes and prices and are easy to customize. You can customize a ready made frame by either adding a mat or having your frame engraved (if it's a surface that can be engraved).
