When I was growing up I was fascinated with the idea of secret codes and different ways of communicating. I think this is one reason I grew up with an interest in languages and also with an interest in learning morse code. I seem to recall that I had a pair of walkie talkies with a morse code key (and cheat sheet attached.) Unfortunately the sound was never as crisp and clear a tone as in the movies and was really just a toy. I never really mastered morse code though, but still wanted to.

Finally when I was studying for my Amateur Radio exams I decided to try and tackle morse code again and managed to learn it well enough to pass the test, but within a short time it had faded somewhat simply out of lack of use. Recently though I've started actually using morse code in a way that I think I will always be able to make use of it and always be able to remember it. I've started using morse code ringtones on my cell phone. You see, most cell phones today allow you to set a separate sound file for each caller. Well, I hade a very hard time trying to figure out which songs would let me know who was calling. Yes there were a few good clear matches, but really with a large contact list it gets a bit tricky to figure out who needs which song.

Of course, my phone could call out the name of the person calling, but I really don't like that as it's too conspicuous. Not only is it conspicuous, the pronunciation can be off or if you've entered someones initials it just doesn't work out that well for me. So, I started toying with making some mp3 ringtones that were morse code for the first name, or initials of callers. Instead of the generic tone for voice mail and text messages I used SMS in morse code for a text message and pix for a picture message. I've used VM for a voice mail incoming. It helps me have an idea of what to expect when the phone starts chirping.

What's most interesting is that when I started toying with using morse code ringtones on my cellphone I really was fairly rusty at recognizing the different letters. Since my phone rings so many times each day it's given me a great way to practice and improve my code listening skills. In fact, I really need to expand my collection of ringtones so that I have more people in my contact list with actual morse ringtones. Right now unidentified callers simply say RING in morse code. It's been a tremendously easy way to identify who is calling though and the daily use of morse code has kept my morse code skills sharper than ever.

If there is a proven way to make sure you can remember something you need to incorporate it into your daily life and just let your brain do the rest! Our brains are amazingly capable of reinforcing memories simply through repetition. Now, I won't say that the first few times my phone rang I knew exactly who it was or what the ring was for. I usually try to listen and decipher and then check the display if at first I don't nail it. Then, I'll go back and replay the sound in my memory to pick up where I may have misinterpreted. Now if only I could send text messages by tapping morse code to input the letters!
