As a homeowner, electrical maintenance is one of the most important things you should do. Just consider that a simple electrical problem might cause a dreadful fire that might not only burn your entire property into ashes but claim lives too. That is why aside from focusing your efforts and money on your home's aesthetics, you should focus on its safety, especially electrical safety.

Fortunately, you can do the electrical maintenance yourself as long as you remember what your teachers have taught you in high school about electricity. However, if you have no single idea about electricity, it’s better to do your homework first. It is a good idea to read books specializing on basic electricity safety before you do any electrical task at home no matter how simple that task is. Here are some basic things you should know before you do electrical maintenance:

• A simple spark from your car’s wiring won’t kill you or even burn your skin. The electrical wiring in your house is different. Electricity from a car’s battery is very minimal, just enough to play the radio or turn on the air conditioner. Electricity running in your home's electrical wiring is composed of hundreds and thousands of watts. A simple touch to an open wire might kill you in an instant.

• When repairing an open wire, make sure it is not connected to any power source. For instance, if you see an open wire on the computer desktop’s wiring, it is not enough to turn off the computer. You should totally unplug the computer from the power outlet before doing any repair.

DIY Electrical Maintenance

Most people choose to undertake the electrical maintenance of their home all by themselves rather than call a professional. For some, a DIY electrical maintenance can save them a lot of money. Whatever your reason is, make sure that you know how to do it properly and safely. Here are some electrical maintenance you can do in your home:

• Check the electrical wiring of each of your electrical equipment. Do this at least twice a month and make sure that the equipment is unplugged before doing this.

• Check the fuse of the electric box and replace broken fuses.

• Check broken outlets or outlets that have no protective covers. The screws visible on outlets without protective covers may cause accidental electrocution.

• Wrap open wires with about five levels of electric tape. However, make sure the wire is unplugged before you do this.

Other Safety Precautions

Aside from electrical maintenance, you should practice safe electrical equipment usage. Unplugging electrical equipment after using it is the simplest you can do. You can also install surge protectors that will protect your electrical equipment when lightning strikes or when there are electrical fluctuations. Lightning might literally blow out your electrical equipment.

Although you can do your own electrical maintenance at home, it is best also to hire a professional electrician to do the job. Sometimes the worst electrical problems are hidden from us. Besides, you only need to hire a professional electrician at least twice a month; it is one of the better investments you can make. Why would you risk your and your family's life, as well as your property, if there are professionals you can hire to provide electrical maintenance?
