Muammar Gaddafi, president of Libya, is looking for a miracle that would keep him as president of Libya. He's been massacring protesters, demanding his resignation, for a week now. After thousands of Libyans were killed and injured by his forces, he's realizing that he needs to find a new strategy that will keep him in power. He came up with the one thing that majority of the world is always obsessed with and scared of. He claims that the demonstrators are non other than, get this, Al Qaeda members and followers. This ridiculous claim, for the most part, wasn't meant to scare his people; rather, it was meant to scare world powers, and in particular, the west. The west, so far, has been relatively silent given the gravity of the situation in Libya, but Gaddafi wants the west to let him do whatever he wants, and use whatever weapons he needs against the protesters. Whenever the west hears about "radical Muslims", a sense of panic and fear takes over, without even thinking if these claims are true or not.
During the Egyptian revolution, where hundreds of thousands of Egyptians from all walks of life came out to demand freedom, most of what I would hear in the media here is "The Muslim Brotherhood is going to take over" and "Egypt is going to end up as a Muslim theocracy". Gaddafi is trying to take it a step further by claiming that Al Qaeda is actually going to take over the country if he's forced out from office. This way, the west will turn a blind eye if Gaddafi uses ethnic cleansing against his people, because they think it's a better outcome than having "Muslim extremists" take over. I don't think most people will be deceived by this ridiculous claim. Western media sources have finally been able to enter Libya since the Eastern part of the country is under the control of the demonstrators now, and people are seeing who these protesters are. They are people tired of living under oppression and under a dictator who has ruled the country with an iron fist for over 42 years now. Sure, there will be some people who believe and preach that the demonstrators are terrorists and want a Muslim Caliphate, country ruled by Muslim law, in Libya, but anyone with an internet connection and a keyboard will find out in a matter of seconds who these protesters really are. In a time of great heartache for Libya, we should support them and help get their message out instead of doubting them and believing all the lies that we hear from a "man" who's time is running out very quickly. I wish the best for the Libyan people and our thoughts and prayers should be with the people of Libya.
