There are many different reasons for choosing artificial insemination as a way of becoming pregnant. These may include being part of a lesbian couple, being part of a couple where the man is infertile or not wishing to become involved in a complicated relationship. Whatever your reasons, having the insemination done at home can be easier and less expensive than an IVF treatment (In vitro fertilization) or IUI (Intra uterine insemination).

DIY or home insemination is, to put it simply, inserting a man's sperm into a woman's genital tract without engaging in sexual intercourse. While there are different methods of achieving this, the most common way is to use a syringe (without a needle).

Finding a Sperm Donor

Before you start the insemination process, it is important that you know what your options are when it comes to sperm donors. There are many online sites offering sperm donors, or you could choose to have one of your friends act as a sperm donor. Alternatively, you could choose to use frozen sperm from a fertility clinic, where you would have the option of using an anonymous sperm donor.

Sperm can only survive for a few hours, so it should either be inserted immediately, or it can be frozen and inserted later. Frozen sperm must only be inserted at body temperature, so care must be taken when it is defrosted.

Before using sperm from a donor, both the donor and his sperm must be screened for health problems, abnormalities or communicable diseases. Along with this, there are certain legal precautions that must be taken to prevent the donor from claiming paternal rights in the future.

Getting the Timing Right

The insemination should be carried out when you are ovulating, in order to maximize your chances of conceiving. With a 28-day cycle, ovulation usually occurs on the 14th day. An ovulation test can be helpful in determining when to carry out the insemination.

Inserting the Sperm

Once the technicalities have been taken care of, you are ready to begin the self-insemination. First the sperm donor will ejaculate into a completely sterile container, after which it should be carefully sealed until it is ready to be inserted into the vagina.

Before inserting the sperm, you should place yourself in a horizontal position on a bed or other place you feel comfortable, with your hips slightly raised with a cushion or pillow. This will help the sperm reach its target more easily.

Next, take your syringe and pull it back once to fill it with air, and then push it out to release the air. Once you have the hang of how it works, you can place it into the container with the semen at a slightly tilted angle, which will aid the suction. Pull back the syringe, taking care to get all of the semen.

Now you can insert the syringe into your vagina as far back as possible. Inject the semen intoyour vagina and wait a few seconds before pulling out the syringe. You should stay in that position for at least 30 minutes while moving as little as possible.

Stay Relaxed

During the insemination, it is important that you feel relaxed and at ease as this will help the whole process to go more smoothly. It is also advisable to try stimulating the clitoris both before and after inserting the sperm. You can do this yourself or have your partner help you; but make sure you avoid penetration.

This will help to keep you relaxed and the vibrations caused by an orgasm will help the cervix to dip into the vaginal pool where the semen is. This increases the chances of the sperm reaching the egg.
