Amino acid therapy is a form of therapy for persons with imbalanced brain chemistry due to deficiency of either one of more amino acids. What is an amino acid? They've often been called the building blocks of life, essential in the production of the many thousands of types of proteins the body uses everyday. They're also used in the 15,000 enzymes used by the human body. To give you an idea of just how much amino acids are used in the body, here's a quote from the book "The Hidden Face of God":
"Each of your seventy five trillion cells is incredibly producing two thousand proteins each second...It makes our heads spin and it should."
It sounds impossible, but it's true. Since each protein in the body is made up of a chain of individual amino acids, you can imagine that being deficient in even 1 of the 20 different amino acids can cause quite a lot of trouble. Of the 20, the body can only produce 12 on its own, and 8 of which must come from the environment through foods, supplements and nutrition. Amino acid therapy aims to correct a possible deficiency that many people experience, thus bringing the body back into healthy alignment.
Amino acid therapy isn't something new. It's been used for the last hundred years or so. The reason why most people haven't heard much about it is because with the advent of modern pharmaceuticals most "home remedies" or things which used natural nutrition instead of manmade drugs were seen as substandard. This couldn't be further from the truth, as most people are now beginning to realize. Manmade drugs always come with a list of unwanted side effects, not to mention the fact that prescription drugs have been shown to slowly damage the kidneys over time.
In almost all cases in human physiology, the body has the ability to regulate its own brain chemistry. When chemicals become imbalanced, many times, it's a product of the environment and nutrition, not of the body's inability to do its job. That's why amino acid therapy helps to balance many of the chemicals in the body, thus helping to treat symptoms like depression and anxiety. As was shown in the first paragraph, amino acids in general really are the building blocks of many of the chemicals our bodies use. Since amino acids have been called the building blocks of life, it only stands to reason that if your foundation is not in good order, the rest of the structure won't be in very good order either. You have to start from the ground up at the foundation.
As far as brain chemistry is specifically concerned, amino acids will only get you so far. Having an abundance of amino acids in the system doesn't guarantee that they'll be utilized in the brain. Other factors, like stress and lack of sleep, have to be regulated as well if you hope that the amino acid therapy will take effect.

Amino acid therapy is really good to learn about, not only because it can be very effective, but because it gives a person a clue into some of the functions of amino acids in general inside the body. For more on the subject, check out my other article on L Carnitine benefits.
