Have you heard of Ionic Silver, also called Colloidal Silver? Ionic or Colloidal silver is a liquid solution, usually water, that has microscopic particles of silver dissolved or suspended in it. Depending on how it's produced, colloidal silver has powerful, natural antibacterial qualities and has been recognized for thousands of years for its medical usefulness. It was the prescription of choice among doctors for treating infection and disease in both America and Europe before antibiotics arrived on the scene in the mid-1900's. Throughout much of history, tests and research have shown that silver is effective against hundreds of different diseases and ailments affecting both humans and animals. It may sound odd to think that a metal can have such positive effects on the human body, but in fact, our bodies thrive on many different metals. Our blood, for example, is full of iron. And potassium is used extensively in the nervous system.

Ionic and Colloidal Silver have been demonstrated to kill a wide range of disease-producing organisms, including bacteria, viruses, fungi, yeast, and the egg-stage of parasites. For this reason, silver can even be a powerful disinfectant and has many potential applications. It can be used to treat special or general conditions and ilnesses, things like the common cold, or moldy carpet. Silver is toxic only to single-celled organisms but does not harm multi-celled organisms, such as the human body. Research indicates that it works by interfering with the internal respiratory cycle of the single-celled organism by disabling an enzyme needed for oxygen metabolism.

Because of the way it works, Colloidal Silver also has the added benefit that it is very difficult for bacteria to grow resistant to it, unlike the situation that occurs with the overuse of antibiotics. Colloidal silver can be made in a variety of ways, and not all silver products are the same. Colloidal silver can even be produced at home, with the help of a colloidal silver generator, a process known as electrolysis, that uses an electrical current to strip the silver down and ionize it in water, which I intend to document in a later hub.

There is much speculation over whether silver is intended to be taken as a normal daily dietary supplement. Concern has arisen over having too high a concentration of silver absorption built up in a person's body through daily intake and consumption. Tests have shown that certain medical conditions, like argyria, can result through over-consumption of a specific kind of colloidal silver. This too, I intend to document in a later hub. Colloidal silver works best when taken at the onset of an illness, and sources recommend that it is most effective when used at the first indication of symptoms. Colloidal silver should not be considered dangerous or unsafe when used as directed to help fight impending disease, much as one would use an antibiotic.

Archaeological evidence has shown that cultures even in ancient times used silver plates to treat and speed wound healing, and drank from silver cups to prevent beverages from spoiling. Hippocrates himself, the Father of Medicine, noted that Silver promoted the healing of wounds and helped control disease. Some cultures also bathed their newborns in bathwater mixed with powdered silver as protection from the germs they would encounter in the world around them.

Ever heard the expression "Born with a silver spoon in his mouth"? Upper class nobility who could afford such luxuries would feed their children from silver spoons because they knew the silver offered protection from the diseases that ran rampant around them. Also, farmers would routinely throw silver coins into their drinking wells and pails of milk to prevent the contents from becoming foul or spoiling. Silver nitrate drops have long been put in the eyes of newborns to prevent blindness, a practice still in use today.

Colloidal Silver is a wonderful gift. When used wisely and taken as directed, it can be highly beneficial in contributing toward abundant good health and wellness.
