Resveratrol is a supplement now highly valued by medicine for its ability to fight cancer and prolong life, and Japanese knotweed resveratrol has very high concentrations of the medicinal substance. Resveratrol is the compound for which red wine is often praised, but many people either can't have alcohol due to prescription drug conflicts, or just plain don't like the idea of having to drink a glass of alcohol everyday. That's why most people turn to resveratrol supplements. But most resveratrol supplements are actually made from Japanese knotwood, not from the skin of grapes. The root of the Japanese knotwood plant has very high concentrations of resveratrol, and the plant itself is considered an invasive weed, making it ideal for growing en mass.

As you will see below, most of the health benefit claims of resveratrol proponents haven't been substantiated in humans. However, there exists a peculiar phenomenon known as the French Paradox, which many people claim as evidence for the efficacy of resveratrol in prolonging life. The French Paradox is the shown observation that French people suffer less instances of coronary heart disease even though they have a diet rich in saturated fats. Because of the fact that red wine is such a strong component in the French diet, the assumption is that the health properties of red wine, namely resveratrol, is one of the key factors in the French Paradox.

There are many reported health benefits of knotweed resveratrol supplements and resveratrol in red wine, but many of the claims are so new, they haven't had proper time to be substantiated. Most of the claims of longevity and cancer fighting have only been corroborated on animal subjects and are currently being researched in humans. But here are the benefits commonly associated with resveratrol:

1. Weight Loss. Many resveratrol supplements are promoted as weight loss products. Most of the claims of weight loss are unsubstantiated however, and are generally driver by user testimonials, which is sometimes a quicker way of finding the truth than waiting for a long study. You can read them yourself and be your own judge.

2. Cancer Fighting. Red wine is very high in antioxidants but is resveratrol by itself? The answer is yes, resveratrol is an antioxidant, making it very healthy to take in the fight against cancer.

3. Coronary Heart Disease. Resveratrol may in fact be good for your heart. Though research is still ongoing, resveratrol seems to be linked to a reduced risk of inflammation and blood clotting, which can definitely be good for the heart. The only problem is that studies are inconclusive about taking resveratrol as a supplement instead of in the red wine itself. Researchers are starting to speculate that red wine as a whole is heart healthy, not one individual component of the red wine. Even certain amounts of alcohol have been shown to be heart healthy, though doctors are understandably wary of promoting alcohol. So results are definitely inconclusive as to whether a knotweed resveratrol supplement is heart healthy like a glass of red wine seems to be.
