I've been investigating the claims of a wide variety of "superfoods" and organic spirulina is high on the list. First, lets answer the question, what is a superfood? A superfood, as some have called them, are foods that contain either all or virtually all of the vitamins, minerals, and nutrients vital for human life. Among them are things like flower pollen or bee pollen, which is immensely nutritious, but very difficult to utilize by the human body. The next question then is what is spirulina? Spirulina is an edible algae found in many regions of the world, and is classified a blue-green edible microscopic algae. Organic spirulina has the extra benefit of not having any extra additives of chemicals. Why is spirulina algae said to be a superfood? There are two main reasons. Because algae in general are very small, sometimes single celled organisms, they have everything essential to simple life stored in each micro-organism. Not only that, but because algae is technically a plant, they are high in concentrations of chlorophyll, which we'll get into in the next section.
Organic spirulina has many benefits, apart from being nutritious. Here are a few:
1. Chlorophyll. Like we discussed in the first section, organic spirulina is high in concentrations of chlorophyll. This is because, in being a microscopic plant, each algae microbe needs its own chlorophyll in order to metabolize energy from the sun, which is where they draw their energy from. This means that algae in general are very high in concentrations of chlorophyll. Why is that good for humans? Though the daily dietary value for chlorophyll intake hasn't been established, studies have shown that chlorophyll does one thing very well, it detoxifies the body from heavy metal pollution, which is very beneficial. Many degenerative diseases, such as Alzheimer's have been linked to heavy metal toxins inside the body, so taking a regular dose of chlorophyll is very recommended. Chlorophyll binds with heavy metals in the body and allows them to be removed. In our modern world of preservatives, pesticides, smog, and toxins, chlorophyll is essential to longevity.
2. Protein. Organic Spirulina contains very high concentrations of animal protein, making it a perfect supplement for vegetarians and vegans. Not only that, but the protein found in organic spirulina is known as a complete protein, meaning that it contains all 20 of the amino acids which are essential to human life. This is very difficult to find anywhere, especially for vegans and vegetarians.
3. Essential Fatty Acids. Organic spirulina is rich in many of the Omega 3 and Omega 6 essential fatty acids, but most notably are the Omega 3 fatty acids DHA and EPA. These two fatty acids are difficult to find in the Standard American Diet, and are often only consumed through fish products. They are very beneficial to brain function, proper chemical balance in the body, and a wide variety of other things. Studies have shown that most persons are deficient in these two essential fatty acids.
4. Vitamins and Minerals. Organic spirulina contains a wide variety of different vitamins and minerals, including Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin A, Vitamin E, Calcium, Iron, Phosphorous, Selenium, Zinc, and many more.
