The more science studies, the more they're uncovering the health benefits of seaweed. Now referred to as sea vegetables or brown algae, western science is just now beginning to discover their health benefits. It seems odd to refer to seaweed and other plant life as vegetables, but some cultures have been regularly eating them for almost 3000 years. The types of ocean plants generally eaten are these: a rame, hijiki, kombu, dulse, wakame, laver, nori. Just as regular vegetables are vital to the body to get the vitamins and minerals it needs, seaweed and sea vegetables provide similar properties with the added benefit of having a few vitamins and minerals that are very rare in land vegetables.
But before we get into the specific health benefits of seaweed and sea vegetables, I want to talk about seaweed from a different perspective. A growing number of reports are suggesting the regular land vegetables are getting steadily worse in the amount and types of vitamins and minerals they provide. Each year, as vegetables grow in farms, corporate farms are only replenishing and fertilizing the soil to the bare minimum in order to grow vegetables again the next season. Many of the vitamins and minerals that were once present in the soil DO NOT get replenished, because it's cheaper just to do the bare minimum. That's why I like the idea of seaweed and ocean vegetables so much. The ocean is self replenishing. Man cannot deplete the wealth of vitamins and minerals present in a body of water that size. So while land vegetables in corporate farms continue to grow steadily worse in nutritional value, seaweed and sea vegetables maintain their benefit to the body.
There are a number of health benefits associated with seaweed and sea vegetables. These are just a few.
1. Longevity and Youthfulness. Those this is scientifically unsubstantiated, researches have seen a direct correlation between regular seaweed consumption and an extended period of youthfulness and vitality. This is partly because seaweed has been shown to have a positive effect on both the hair and the skin, giving its recipient a more youthful appearance. Seaweed strengthens the health of the hair and gives a glow about the skin.
2. Detoxifying Agent. Seaweed and sea vegetables have been shown to be very powerful detoxifying agents. This is for two reasons. First, seaweed binds with heavy metals they come into contact with, forcing the body to expel them. Second, because of the nature of the chlorophyll in algae, it's not only much simpler, but also much more powerful. Chlorophyll is one of the strongest detoxers known to man, and eating food algae in any form provides a person with a very powerful dose!
3. Trace Minerals. There are certain vitamins and minerals that are just hard to get in foods. Seaweed is a powerful source of many of the trace vegetables that are generally only otherwise found in pill supplements. But the body can always utilize minerals in foods better than minerals in pills.
Some other benefits that seem to come from seaweed and sea vegetables are these:
Increased Metabolism Increased Immune System Function Increased Brain Function Increased Hormone Regulation
People need to eat fresh vegetables, and I'm not talking about the vegetables you buy at the store. These vegetables have grown steadily worse at time has gone by. In today's modern society of corporate farms, in order to get the right vitamins and minerals from vegetables, you need to either raise your own garden, or eat seaweed and sea vegetables. That's the only way to ensure that your body is getting everything it needs. Otherwise, you're at the whim of corporate farms putting only the bare minimum of fertilizers and mineral replenishment to make the crops grow again next year.
