Although metal beds had some popularity during the Renaissance, they were not as popular as wood bedroom sets. It was during this period when beds and chests began to gain in popularity with the rope bed being one of the most popular. It was also during this time that other furniture started to become popular and thus the use of wooden furniture extended to other areas of the house including the living room, dining room and outdoors. The popular rope bed was used both as a place for sleeping similar to the hammock as well as for holding a mattress.
Bedroom sets—or suites as they were often called—gained in popularity during the Renaissance. Other types of furniture also became more popularity thus making the Renaissance a period that bespoke of a variety of wood furniture including that of the bed and chest. You may also find this was a period of buffets, hutches and even free standing closets instead of the built in styles that are in modern homes. However, it is worthwhile to note that the furniture from the Renaissance and other early periods in history were sturdier and better made that what we know today because it was made by hand rather than machine.
The wooden canopy bed is still in use today though not as versatile as it was during the Renaissance when the canopy bed was used to keep the rain off in case the roof should leak. In addition it was enclosed with screens in order to keep the bugs away when you were sleeping. Improvements in roofing and insect control make these uses for the canopy bed no longer necessary it still remains a very popular bedroom item in the 21st century where it is available in a variety of styles and materials.
The four poster canopy bed is another popular bed from the Renaissance period that is still in use today, although it is more often used simply as a four poster bed than as a canopy. This is likely to be the one more commonly used with insect netting because of the way it is made. The four post bed is quite sturdy and the perfect choice for someone looking for a canopy bed that is sturdy and well-made. Its endurance over time proves that it is capable of enduring much use and abuse.
Though not as popular as wood, the metal canopy bed is another one that that had some continued popularity. Though in most cases metal is seen as sturdier, modern times find fewer adults buying canopy beds for themselves and thus more twin beds are on the market. Wood is seen as less damaging as metal beds and its lack of rails and slats makes it a preferred choice for parents and canopy bed manufacturers. Even today wood tends to be a more popular choice for beds than metal or iron although all three choices are available on the market.
