It's the biggest freeze here in Scotland in the last 30 years, as I write this article the view from my apartment is of a beautiful white crisp cityscape and the temperate is set to drop to also zero degrees Fahrenheit tonight in some parts of the country.

Obviously I'm not saying you should get outdoors and train when it gets that cold! However, when I do my work as a personal trainer in Scotland people ask me how to get slim and lose weight by training outdoors.

The first reason is I'm an outdoor personal trainer and weight loss coach here in Glasgow, the second is a lot of clients feel uncomfortable going to the gym. It's usually getting stared at, too many mirrors, too much sweat and too much lycra (and too many attitudes and people with big egos).

Of course many gyms aren't like that and they would be just fine to go and train in, but it's the FEAR factor that puts people off, and why go through that anyway when you have a beautiful country outside just waiting for you to enjoy it? A lot of us are stuck in offices so getting outside in the fresh air has many many benefits.

You might not already know that If you do fitness training in cold weather, you can burn up to TWICE the number of calories you'd burn doing similar exercises in a warm air conditioned gym, and when it gets really hot your cardio vascular system has to work harder so you'll get fitter from the heat too!

Of course, I'm assuming you're ok to exercise with no medical conditions when I say this, and that you listen to your body when you get really hot, cold or tired. This is of course what everyone should do anyway when they train.

So... you've hired a personal trainer in Glasgow, in Scotland, or maybe you've just hired a personal fitness coach in the place where you live anywhere in the world and you want to train and lose weight while enjoying the outdoors. Where do you start? I'll give you 3 methods to get slim training outdoors.

1 - Chopping Wood

This is a great way to get fit! It works your back, your shoulders and your legs. Bend your legs, get a good swing overhead and hold on tight to the axe! Remember to wear goggles and safety gloves. Start by trying to chop for 10 minutes straight before taking a break, and record how long you can chop for. This will give you a great challenge to improve your chopping endurance, with an added bonus that if you have your own coal or wood fire you'll save big bucks on buying in fuel!

2 - Walking with Weight

Put on a comfortable rucksack (with a stomach strap) and a couple of large bottles of mineral water in, or a sack of sand if you're feeling strong. And walk briskly for between 20 and 60 minutes. This time is ideal to talk through weight loss and nutrition with your personal trainer so you can learn all of his or her weight loss secrets for yourself.

3 - Circuit training

If it's cold it is important to keep moving, and make sure you don't cool down too much in your rest periods. This means that large body movements are the perfect workout, like squats, jumps, sit ups and press ups (as long as you have a mat to protect you from the cold wet ground beneath.)

Get your personal trainer to construct a circuit for you and aim to do it once to begin with, this will give you a goal of being able to run through the circuit faster, and more than once as you get fitter and lose weight.

So I don't know as you read this if it's hot or cold outside for you... if you live in the city or the beautiful countryside, but if you want to do some personal training for yourself, or with a personal trainer, don't let what nature can offer you go to waste, make the most of it and good luck from Glasgow In Scotland with your personal training goals!
