When you first read the title of this article, it might seem that burning fat and avoiding boredom snacking are two completely different things. When I work with personal training clients here in Scotland it often seems that way to them too… until we dig beneath the surface. When you look a little deeper it is clear that the two are not mutually exclusive, but are actually co-dependant. We eat when we are bored: you must have read interviews with people who talk about being "too busy to eat" or they will insist that they "simply forget about food" and whilst irregular meals aren't healthy, it is clear that if you are occupied with something else, food takes a backseat. Therefore, if you are snacking due to boredom, remove the inertia and the snacks will be forgotten! Of course it depends WHAT you are bored with: your day, your week, the way you look, your life as a whole!?

The secret - and I’ll tell you this right from the start - is that when we eat because we are bored, the boredom affects our self image, which in turn STOPS us getting up off our asses and doing something about it.

So DISTRACTION THERAPY is perfect for those times when junk food is screaming your name, and you are screamingly bored. If you retrain your subconscious to crave movement rather than crisps you will not only avoid snacking, you will even burn fat!

Here are my top 5 tips for making DISTRACTION THERAPY a part of your daily routine:

1. No sofa for a week – Stack up your sofa on its end in the corner of your lounge and put some regular wooden chairs (or whatever you’ve got to sit on that isn’t as comfortable) in your usual spot. If you are uncomfortable you WILL get up and do something else.

2. Don’t sit down – When you get home from work you won’t have that sofa to sit on anyway, so keep on your feet and keep going; go for a walk, go to the shops, go see friends. You can do ANYTHING apart from sitting down and starting that boredom cycle that’s made you so demotivated and bored. If the weather is too wild to walk in, or you simply want to be at home, do something practical! Clean the bathroom, wash the dishes or change the sheets - in fact, ALL housework will have a calorific expenditure!

3. If you can't bear the thought of missing your favourite soap, do some ironing whilst watching the tv: standing up burns more calories than sitting down and you don't have a sofa this week anyway!

4. Listen to music that you love when you walk, clean or do an activity. This will make you go between 5 and 10 percent faster, and you’ll probably enjoy it more along the way as well as feeling emotionally uplifted.

5. When you feel emotional, COMMUNICATE instead of eat. We all use different behaviours to deal with our emotions, and eating is a very popular one. A better way to deal with emotion is to talk about it - call a friend or relative; join a web-community or forum. If you can't face human contact, WRITE IT DOWN!

The most important thing to remember is that you WANT THINGS TO BE DIFFERENT. If you plan to distract yourself and beat your boredom, you can start a new life with a new you - more motivated, less lethargic and no longer a slave to the biscuit tin!
