The True Legend of St. Dunstan and the Devil by Edward G. Flight originated the superstition of nailing a horseshoe over the door to keep out evil spirits. The legend begins with St. Dunstan living in his cell and happily going about his daily tasks of metalworking, singing, and playing his harp. The legend describes St. Dunstan's music,

"And when with tuneful voice he sang, His well strung harp's melodious twang Accompaniment lending; So sweetly wedded were the twain, The chords flowed mingled with the strain, Mellifluently blending."

As the legend continues, the devil makes his appearance spreading "germs of wicked deeds" throughout the countryside. When the devil hears St. Dunstan's music, he becomes enraged with jealousy.

The devil begins making horrendous noises, hurting St. Dunstan's ears. The next morning, St. Dunstan prepares an iron horseshoe and nails. When the devil arrives, St. Dunstan grabs his foot and nails the burning hot horseshoe to the devil's foot.

The devil's screams awakens everyone in the village. When St. Dunstan finished nailing the horseshoe to the devil's foot, he smiled, asking the devil for a dance.

From that day foreword, the devil will not enter a house that has a horseshoe hanging over the door.

"KNOW YE that for himself and heirs said Devil covenants and declares, that never at morn or evening prayers at chapel church or meeting, never where concords of sweet sound sacred or social flow around or harmony is woo'd, nor where the Horse-Shoe meets his sight on land or sea by day or night on lowly sill or lofty pinnacle on bowsprit helm mast boom or binnacle, said Devil will intrude."

St. Dunstan Prayer

O God of truth and Beauty, Who didst richly endow thy Bishop Dunstan with skill in Music and the working of metals, And with gifts of administration And reforming zeal: Teach us, We beseech thee, to see in thee the Source of all our talents, and Move us to offer them for the Adornment of worship and the Advancement of true religion; Through Jesus Christ our Lord, Who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Spirit, one god, Now and forever.
