You do not need to live in a mansion to make your home look luxurious yet comfortable, stunning yet 'lived in'. Check out these top 10 ideas for home improvement that will have your neighbours gushing:

Jazzy curtains: Curtains add drama to the overall look and feel of your home. Go for warm yellow curtains, soft cream sofas and rugs for a cosy look. For a dramatic effect, consider a beige/grey theme for a room and break the monotone by adding red, orange or magenta curtains on decorative rods.

Glass and mirrors: In a room that is really small and prone to a lack of natural daylight, create a doubling effect by positioning a mirror opposite glossy furniture. This will improve your room's proportions instantly and make it seem much bigger.

Let there be light: Since your home is an extension of your personality and style, there is no better way to decorate it than by lighting. Use functional lighting such as lamps throughout the house instead of one big light or highlight art and paintings with track lighting.

Size does matter: Pick smaller furniture instead of bulky pieces that will overpower and cramp each room, but avoid the urge to clutter a room with too many small pieces of furniture.

Corners and hidden areas: Turn these precious niches into functional areas. Place a tall lamp or a sleek chrome table in a corner with candles or bright flowers in a quirky vase. The space beneath the stairs can become a bookshelf or a cupboard. Rugs and throws: Colourful rugs in geometric patterns and bold colours make for a fun atmosphere. Also try fluffy rugs and throws in quirky colours and various textures - 'carelessly' toss them on the sofa for a lived-in look.

Experiment with colour: Try accent walls in red, orange, and lime green to break the monotony. Keep the ceiling white, though.

Statement pieces: Try chairs and sofas in unusual shapes. Go for asymmetrical pieces and make sure at least one item (wall art, antique clocks, a carved wood centre table) in each room is a "statement piece" that will act as the focal point.

Flooring options: Choose from vinyl, carpeted, hard wood, vintage or laminated flooring to radically transform your living spaces.

Go for a contemporary look: Contemporary furnishings open up living spaces and give them a modern aesthetic. Try low-slung white gloss furniture or chrome/steel pieces for a minimalistic look. Keep clutter away and always remember - less is more.
