LG's Optimus 3D is the first smartphone with 3D technology. Not only that, it also offers 3D without the need for special glasses.
The Optima 3D made its debut at the Mobile World Conference earlier this year and caused a splash. While some may consider 3D smartphone technology to be a gimmick, LG is obviously banking on the technique to counter the hold Samsung has on the smartphone market with their Galaxy range.
The Optima 3D has a dual core 1GHz OMAP4 processor supplied by Texas Instruments and uses the Android operating system. While the phone feels heavier and chunkier than its competitors, it is still comfortable to use.
The large, 4.3 inch, touchscreen is unimpeded by physical buttons. LG preferred to opt for invisible buttons for the traditional Android controls of Menu, Home, Back and Search. Apart from these, the front of the Optimus 3D has only a front-mounted 5 megapixel camera lens.
On the right of the phone are the volume control and a 3D control. The latter switches the display from the normal 2D to 3D, which LG have achieved through the use of parallax barrier technology, eliminating the need for special glasses. Rather than appearing to reach out from the screen, the 3D effect gives/depth to the image. To see it , you need to hold the camera in a fixed position. Otherwise, the image loses the 3D appearance. Also 3D only works in landscape mode.
Useful features include covers over the HDMI and mini-USB ports, to keep grit and dirt out as well as the placement of the 3.5mm headphone socket on the top of the phone, to let you use the headphone use without blocking the display. Turn over the Optimus 3D and things start to get interesting. Embedded in a smart metal plate are two lenses for the camera, with a small LED flash located between them. Why two lenses? Simply to be able to record stills and video in 3D, just the way our own eyes see the world. But remember that to operate in 3D mode, the camera must be in landscape mode.
If you have invested in a 3D TV set, you'll be pleased to know that you can send your 3D content to your 3D TV via the HDMI port, although the 3D video content will only be at 720p HD. Apart from the 3D capabilities, the Optimus 3D is a very capable smartphone. The large screen certainly gives a great experience in normal mode. It remains to be seen whether the 3D technology takes off for smartphones or not. The jury is still out on that one. Exciting times indeed!
