Any parent of an autistic child ponders the thought, at what age do behaviors change in people with autism? It is difficult to watch a child with autism function in the outside world, and every parent hopes that the signs of autism will decrease as the child ages. Autism is known in the media and among people unaffected by it, to be a disorder in children, but what happens as a child ages, and how may the behaviors change as your child ages? Unfortunately, autism does not only attack children, but it affects many adults in the United States and around the world.

Autism is a complicated disorder, that affects about 1 in every 100 persons currently. The symptoms vary from person to person, but most people report similar behaviors, including difficulty communicating with the outside world, obsessive tendencies, self inflicted harmful behaviors, and lack of eye contact. The causes and treatments of autism are still in question, and are highly controversial. Due to this fact, many behavioral disorders are given the diagnosis as autism.

Signs of autism begins in children as young as six months of age. Parents note that there is a lack of connection or being soothed by being held by the parents, not smiling at six months of age, and the inability to babble or exhibit baby noises by age one. As a child with autism ages, the more profound the symptoms appear, usually leading to a diagnosis that there is something wrong.

In severe cases, people classified, as having "low functioning" symptoms, with autism, will cope with this disorder throughout their entire lives. As a child ages, and becomes an adult, they are often unable to communicate, feed themselves, dress themselves, or bathe themselves. Many will be placed in facilities where long term care is needed, to take care of their day to day needs.

Higher functioning autistic children can often grow up to lead seemingly well-adjusted lives. Many children may recover from their early behaviors and can function with daily routine. They learn behaviors that are more suitable and can control the obsessive tendencies that often accompany autism. Some high functioning autistic children are able to attend regular public schools, but may struggle with learning. They may be able to lead average lives, have families, and function at jobs.

Many autistic people will be placed in homes that have living conditions, which are designed to assist people with autism. They may be able to hold a job, but live in a home with other autistic adults where the home is monitored by a trained person, who can assist with daily living.

The transition from childhood to adulthood in autistic children is radically different in every case, and each individual will have a variety of needs, that must be met. With a supportive family, many autistic children are able to lead healthy, daily lives, and outsiders would be unaware that individual was autistic. With the advances in medical science and the research going into studying autism, there is hope our children today will be guided to lead more healthy and ordinary lives, than autistic people who are now currently adults. To answer the question, at what age do behaviors change in people with autism, it is a case by case basis that changes with each individual.
