People give wine gift baskets for special occasions all year: the holidays, birthdays, anniversaries, new jobs, retirement, parties, birth of newborn, weddings, even divorces. Wine gift baskets make great gifts and are relatively inexpensive, depending on the type and age of the wine that you include. Since most Americans drink wine, these make practical gifts as well. But there are a few protocols that you should observe.

The first protocol is to know your gift recipient. In other words, does the recipient of your wine gift basket drink wine or alcoholic beverages? Some people are offended at receiving wine as a gift because they do not indulge. Though offending someone may have been the exact opposite of your intentions, sometimes the best intentions are not realized.

The next protocol to observe is family history or health and runs parallel to knowing your recipient. If your recipient has a health history or family history of alcoholism, you want to re-think your gift. Again, though well intentioned, the gift could eventually throw someone into the grip of a dreaded disease. You definitely would not want to do that.

If you have ascertained the recipient of your gift does indulge and does not have a family history or health problems related to alcoholism, your next protocol will be to learn what kind of wine it is that they appreciate. There is no sense in spending good money on a pricey wine of the recipient drinks inexpensive table wine for the most part. However, if they have a discerning palate, you will want to research your wine to ensure that it will mesh with their liking.

With a tremendous variety of wines to choose from, there should be a flavor that appeals to even the most particular of recipients. Of course if you run across a wine snob, you probably have bitten off more than you can chew, or even want to.

Wine as a gift means many thing to different people. There are some who will jump at the first excuse to crack open the bottle, while other will want to save your gift for another occasion entirely. Remember to not be offended as the giver if your recipient decides to imbibe or partake on another occasion. You might even be honored that they saved your gift (unless you wanted some, of course).

You can make your own fine wine gift basket or you can probably go to your favorite liquor store and purchase one for the giving. A wine basket that is hand-made carries the personal touch that recipients seem to appreciate. Within your custom-made basket you can include a few little things that can enhance your gift. A selection of certain types of cheese makes for a great companion gift as well as salty-type snacks like cashews or pretzels.

Most ready-made wine gift baskets come with companion gifts, but you basically have to take what they come with as opposed to mixing and matching. But if you have observed your protocols properly, you will not go wrong with a wine gift basket.
