With so many people in the United States struggling with weight issues it should come as no surprise that many people are considering different weight loss surgery options. There are a few different types of weight loss surgery procedures available but in the past few years many people have been talking about a relatively new and very successful weight loss surgery known as Gastric sleeve surgery. Gastric sleeve surgery is a type of bariatric surgery that is designed to help people lose weight. However, there are a number of things to know about this surgery before having it done because like with any operation, having surgery done is a serious matter.

It is first important to know what this surgery is, the gastric sleeve surgery is a process where a surgeon makes an incision in the stomach. This surgical procedure is performed as a laparoscopic procedure. This means that the surgery is done through several small incisions rather than one large one. They remove about 85 percent of the stomach longitudinally and rejoin the remaining part of the stomach with staples. The end result has the stomach looking likea cylindrical tube or sleeve, thus resulting in the name of the procedure. There is another part of the stomach is also removed in this procedure, the fundus. The fundus is a hormonal mechanism that makes you hungry and when it is removed it ultimately reduces your urge to eat.

This allows the gastric sleeve surgery to achieve to main objectives, to shrink your stomach so that you feel full after a small meal and to curb your appetite by removing the fundus and therefore the ghrelin in your body that makes you hungry. This surgery was originally created to be a complete weight loss procedure for anyone with a Body Mass Index of 35 or higher. However, now the procedure is usually paired with a second step. In some cases it is followed with a very strict bariatric diet plan. In other cases it is followed up with regular gastric bypass surgery a few months later.

This surgery is recommended for those who are usually 80 pounds over weight for a woman and 100 pounds for a man. It is also recommended for those with obesity related illnesses and need to lose weight for even more serious reasons. To prepare for the surgery, patients must do a few things such as quitting smoking for at least a month. Also many surgeon suggest that the patient goes on a special diet for a few weeks leading up to the procedure. The surgery is non- reversible and it is usually completed in about an hour. The patient will be sore and swollen at first and will be put ona liquid diet for about 2 weeks.

After the surgery is done many people will lose about 50 to 80 percent of their excess body weight. Over time as they train themselves to eat less, they can lose even more. This is why this surgery is recommended to those who want to lose large amounts of weight so they can finally get healthier.
