Subwoofers are specific types of loudspeakers that are useful in producing low frequencies. Subwoofers are used in music systems especially 2.1, 5.1, and 7.1 and typically work in conjunction with the speakers to play low frequencies. More often than not, subwoofers are generally hidden under the tables or behind the TV sets. However, in automobiles this 'hidden' approach does not usually work.

Infact it is the other way around as speakers are hidden in the front or in the door while the subwoofers sit nicely behind, in full view of the passengers. Usually it is impossible to fit large drivers in doors or dashboards and hence the subwoofers are installed in the trunks. Many people like deep thumping music however; cars do not always come fitted with subwoofers and rather rely on the speakers to do the job.

Subwoofers also come in varying sizes ranging from 8" - 15" in diameter and sometimes-even going up to 32" subwoofers. So depending on the car and on the quality of sound preferred, the subwoofer will be chosen. But before you go shopping, there are a few things to keep in mind.

1. Budget is of primary concern so decide on how much you want to spend on buying the system.

2. Always keep in mind that the purchase you make will directly affect how you listen to your favorite music.

3. If you listen to classical, rock, or country one sub will do but for rap, R&B, or techno two subs usually work better. Then again, it also depends on your car size.

4. Decide on the placement as with technological advancements subwoofers have become smaller and can be placed even under the seats or on the side panels by reducing their driver size. Often, smaller cars face this problem.

5. Research on the internet for subwoofers. Read reviews, check ownership reviews, and check out company websites to get a clear picture on what subs can be suitable for your car.

6. Size is important too and usually the larger they are, the lower the frequencies produced. Usually sizes for cars are 8-inch, 10-inch, 12-inch, and 15-inch. So if you want lower bass, get a 15-inch woofer.

7. Subwoofers also require power and those that require a lot of RMS, are generally more expensive. It is important to know how much power rating is suitable for a current speaker set, as higher power will generally require an additional investment in an amplifier.

8. Amplifiers are actually not a bad buy but usually the best ones are those that complement the subs' RMS ratings without going overboard. It is also important that the total harmonic distortion (THD) of an amplifier is as low as possible.

9. It is also important to know the a cone setup of a subwoofer is generally available in Kevlar, polypropylene, aluminum, or carbon fiber cone and lastly paper. Paper cones are the cheapest while carbon fiber cones can produce the best sound quality.

10. Buy a subwoofer that is within your budget that could include either the cheaper MTX or the more expensive Infinity and Polk.

One of the most important pieces when it comes to car stereo is car subwoofers. If you want to learn more about subwoofers then please visit our website.
