Cataract issues are both very troubling and very common in the United States. Millions of adults in the US currently have issues with cataracts, and the condition will only worsen with age. With cataracts a certain type of skin begins to form over the eye which makes it very difficult to see, this forms because of metabolic changes in the eye's lens fiber. Basically, the eye begins to be opacified and vision becomes dull, there are issues with glares, people have very blurred vision, their nearsightedness gets worse and the condition will only worsen. If not treated, overtime cataracts can lead to total vision loss.

Fortunately, for those who have cataracts there are ways to overcome this issue, with corrective cataract surgery. Every year millions of cataract surgeries are done in the United States and each year more and more people are seeking this treatment for their cataracts. The reason that cataract surgery is so popular is because it is one of the only proven methods of fixing cataract issue and it is a very safe and effective operation. If you are one of the many people who is suffering from cataracts and wants to get cataract surgery done on your eyes, there are a few things to know about the procedure before getting it done.

When an eye surgery is done a doctor will go in and replace the lens of your eye with a new artificial lens. It is important to remember that this is a lengthier operation than LASIK eye surgery, and you will be given local anesthesia for the procedure. Fortunately, there is a low risk of complication with this surgery and most procedures quickly restore vision after the affected lens has been removed. There are three basic types of cataract operations. The type that will be performed on your eyes all depends on how advanced your cataracts are.

After assessing your eyes and your cataracts the doctor will inform you of the different surgical options and let you know what type of procedure he will be performing. Typically all of these procedures are relatively quick and can be done in 30 minutes or less. Some procedures will require stitches in the eye, but those are typically saved for the most severe cases. Most individuals who have cataracts will have a surgery performed that will require no stitches or eye patches after surgery.

Cataracts are easily diagnosed by any optometrist and if you are told that you have cataracts forming on your eyes it is important to get them taken care of sooner rather than later. The sooner you get your cataracts treated the less invasive the surgery will be and the quicker your recovery time will be as well. Cataracts effect many people in the United States but just because you have cataracts it doesn't mean you can't have great vision and healthy eyes. With cataract surgery many people are able to completely restore their vision and live without the stresses of cataracts.
