The Achilles tendon is one of the most commonly known tendons in the body. Although this tendon is famous for its connections to mythology, many people simply know where the Achilles tendon is and not what it does. The Achilles tendon is actually a large, fibrous cord of tissues that connects the calf muscles to the bones in the heel. This tendon is often nicknamed the "heel cord" as it works as a cord that moves the foot so that we can walk properly. The Achilles tendon is not only one of the most well known tendons in the body but it is also one of the most prone to injury.
The Achilles tendon is easily injured because there is generally poor blood supply issues the this part of the body. Many people experience Achilles tendon pain, and eventually find out that some type of injury has been done to the tendon. Many people do not realize right when they injure their Achilles tendon, but after it has sustained injury, an injured Achilles tendon can cause anyone a great deal of pain. There are a few different issues that can cause Achilles tendon pain and it is important to understand these different issues in case you ever find yourself dealing with Achilles tendon pain.
The most common source of Achilles tendon pain comes from tendonitis. When this occurs, there is a deterioration of the tissues that make up the Achilles tendon. This is usually caused by a lack of proper blood flow to the area and improper nutrition for the cells that make up the tendon. When this happens and the cells do not get the proper amount of blood or nutrition they can break down and simply die. There are a few symptoms of tendonitis in the Achilles tendon. You will experience continual pain in the back of the leg and the heel while running, walking, playing sports or doing exercises. The heel will be stiff in the morning and you may see a bump or swelling around the tendon.
This problem usually occurs in those who are obese, don't stretch before exercise, are on certain drugs, runners, people with flat feet and those with arthritis. Typically the injury is treated with rest, icing and massage. Typically people will be recommended to do some type of rehabilitation to rebuild and restrengthen the muscle as well. While this is the most common type of tendon injury, there are other injuries that can occur to the Achilles tendon as well. Ruptures and tears can occur with some athletes who put too much stress on their tendon. Inflammation can also occur because of overuse as well.
No matter what types of issues you are having with your Achilles tendon, it is important to immediately rest the area. Too much stress can lead to dangerous tears that require surgery. After resting and icing the area if pain persists, always call a doctor. Achilles tendon problems are quite common in people of all ages, and if not handled properly by a doctor they can lead to many serious issue down the line.
