To see where the green jobs are in your area, I have listed three maps below. These maps are not the complete picture of green jobs. By doing your own research you can discover where the green jobs are in your area. As the green economy grows, more and more established companies are re-examining the way they do business and making positive changes. Do not over look this possibility.

Energy Industries

Earth2Tech, a blog that covers a variety of green economy topics that intersect with the tech industry, has been plotting the companies they've been writing about on a series of Google Maps (http://earth2tech.com/maps).

- The first two maps show the demise of ethanol plants and coal powered plants. These are industries that are losing jobs, not gaining them.

- Keep scrolling down that page to see the next maps highlighting several renewable energy industries. Click on the link under each map to expand the image into a full sized Google map.

o Cleantech Startups o Utility Solar Installations o Cellulosic Biofuels o Wind Turbine Manufacturers: The icons on this map are a bit hard to see. Look for green wind turbines.

Batteries and Electric Vehicles

Recently President Obama made a speech in Elkhart, Indiana. In that speech he announced the largest investment in advanced battery technology ever made. $2.4 billion in grants are going toward manufacturing batteries and electric drive components, as well as methods to push electric vehicles into the marketplace.

This news indicates that manufacturing jobs in these industries will increase. That may or may not be of interest to you.

What should be of interest to you is that as these industries develop, the electric vehicle industry is likely to get a big boost. When there's a reliable, sought-after electric vehicle to sell, then we'll start seeing a bigger variety of job titles in the mix - marketing, sales, sales support as well as all the job functions required to run large, thriving companies.

For a more detailed look at where the grants are headed, take a look at this press release from the Department of Energy. http://www.energy.gov/news2009/7749.htm

In addition, this two-page pdf file shows where the grant-winning companies are located. (http://www1.eere.energy.gov/recovery/pdfs/battery_awardee_map.pdf) Then take a look at a detailed spreadsheet (http://www1.eere.energy.gov/recovery/pdfs/battery_awardee_list.pdf) with the company names, descriptions, locations, and grant amount.

Green Collar Jobs - Clean Energy, Good Jobs

The Apollo Alliance is plotting green economy/green collar job success stories (http://apolloalliance.org/programs/apollo-14/signature-stories) from around the country. From local training programs to a cap and invest system in the northeast (see Albany, NY).

Although you may not be targeting a green collar job, paying attention to the trends in this social justice movement can illustrate major advancements in the general green economy. This organization has had a strong influence on a number of details in several bills that have the potential to shape the green economy. Definitely a group to watch.

Actions You Can Take

- Look at these maps in a series. Do you see any geographic trends?

- Now take a look at how your region fares in the maps. What industries appear to be taking hold in your region?

- Click on various icons to read about the companies that exist in your area or in your target industry. Often the description has contact links to the company web sites. If you see something that's interesting, bookmark it immediately. (Trust me on this, it's easy to find a hot item and then lose it in the sea of icons!)
