In the beginning there was Marmaris, not the Marmaris of modern day legend of bars, clubs and a certain well known fast food burgher joint, but a quiet hatchling village that was just a small harbour waiting to be developed into 'The Next Best' new glittering holiday resort, and as Bodrum and Gumbet exploded at the seams when holidays to Turkey become the de rigeur destination of the moment, Marmaris started to develop into the gargantuan holiday resort of today. Back then, Icmeler was practically unheard off, it was a village by the sea like so many others on that coast and the only people that knew it existed was the locals themselves; But as Marmaris blossomed and bloomed, there was one glaring omission about Marmaris that had been overlooked at the time of its conception, although rich with bars, varied nightlife and big hotels, been a harbour it didn't have the best of beaches for the beach lovers so the developers looked at the forgotten little village next to Marmaris and started to develop the area for the influx of tourists that were sure to descend from Brittan and all over Europe.

For a while, Icmeler was known as the tail end of Marmaris, the quiet little sister resort of the garishly loud elder Marmaris, which frankly is quite an undignified referral to the little resort with the big big heart, because Icmeler IS really quite charming. It has a lovely bay framed by a swathe of golden sandy beach and crowned by lush mountains, and nestled in this little nook and cranny there is a selection of small hotels, apartments, and a sprinkling of bars and restaurants that cater to all the whims and needs of the visitors that descend every summer. Of course you still have the big resort hotel complexes that fringe central Icmeler, the Mares was the first to be built in the area, followed by Marmaris Palace, but these big self sustaining resort hotels were built when there was nothing for people to do in Icmeler and thus are a reflection of the times when they were built, saying that, many recurring guests like the resort hotels, they don't have to leave the premises as they offer a good All Inclusive so there's really no need for daily excursions outside the property parameters, however, if like me this type of holiday is anathema to ones senses and you prefer the intimate friendliness of the smaller BB hotels and self catering properties that are dotted around Icmeler then in truth there is a range of choice to suit all budgets and needs. There is something to be said about Icmeler, it is more intimate than Marmaris, every one knows everything and everyone, and all visitors are on first name basis within twenty four hours of setting foot there, and recurring guests and locals that work there will greet each other warmly the next time they visit. Living in a city, as I do, these are little touches that do mean something, can you imagine seeing thousands of tourists every year, and remembering names and faces a year later? I certainly can't, I barely remember my name yet alone a resort full of recurring names and faces.

Admittedly it can be quite a chore to introduce the Marmaris clients to Icmeler and vice versa, but those in the know, are fully aware of the benefits of straddling both resorts; From Icmeler to Marmaris on a local dolmus you can traverse the distance in approximately ten to fifteen minutes, which means you can happily take advantage of the lower key lifestyle of Icmeler enjoy the pretty bustle of the cafes and restaurants without the onslaught of the bar and restaurant reps that litter the evening streets of Marmaris, whilst still taking advantage and enjoying the shopping and markets that Marmaris has to offer. These benefits as far as I'm concerned are precious there are not that many resorts that when twinned the way Marmaris and Icmeler are, can offer a double bubble experience. You will often see those staying in Marmaris sneaking into Icmeler so that they can spread out on the lovely sandy beaches and get a bit of quiet from the night before, in return you will see the Icmeler tribe descend on Marmaris for their one chosen night of madness in the local harbour bars, letting their hair down and god knows what else.
