Situated in the western part of the European mainland on the Iberian Peninsula, Portugal is one of the oldest countries in Europe. It is among the smallest countries there but yet one of the major and wonderful tourist destinations that is worth enough to explore. It is a country where you can see the blend of outstanding monuments, castles, churches along with advanced new buildings and technologies.

Beaming with wide and vibrant richness, this country has ancient towns and fortresses, roman temples and country estates. It has an abundance of UNESCO heritage cities with the historic centers of Oporto, Sintra and Evora leading the way. The country that was occupied by some of the great western civilizations such as the Romans, Greeks, Phoenicians and Carthaginians, also offer numerous ancient spots that are worth to be explored. The ruins of 12th century castle stand perched on the abyss between Vimioso and Mogadouro in the far northeast of Portugal. Adding to this, you can also find mysterious Roman ruins near the town Belmonte. In Lisbon, the capital of Portugal, there is a place where you can see the remains of the Abbey of Carmo that looms over Rossio Square.

Just in case, if you are looking for other options apart from visiting ruins of ancient civilization then fine architected monuments can be the ideal alternative. Lisbon's Jeronimos Monastery, Oporto's Se Cathedral, Viana's Old City Hall and Sintra's Pena Palace are few of them that illustrate the finest examples of Baroque, Medieval, and Neoclassical architecture.

If ruins of history or ancient architecture are not your area of interest then you don't need to get worried. Portugal is also well known for its pulsating natural beauty. It has great green scenery which is very rare to find in any other part of the world. This country offers numerous options like steeply terraced vineyards, stunning Monchique Mountains and Ria Formosa national park. You can also tour the north and Douro Valley for fabulous sight scenes.

For those who are looking for adventure or outdoor activities then great golfing courses are also available. The golf courses of the Sul do Tejo on the Lisbon Costa Azul are few of them that offer some truly outstanding experience. Water sport lovers can have a splash with surfing, fishing, diving and sailing in the deep sea.

You may enjoy fishing at various places in Portugal. In the north, all you require is a fishing license that is available from local town halls in the city.

Finally, holidays in Portugal are incomplete unless you enjoy shopping at Alfana Market located in Lisbon. If you are looking for bargains, then this is the place to reach out for. Moreover, there are many other cities where you can also enjoy shopping for various products like leather goods, embroidered and brightly-coloured hand-painted tiles and ceramics.
