With each new release of Apple's iPhone, customers continue to complain about its poor battery life and lack of a user-replaceable battery. Even moderate use of the iPhone's best features, like GPS, watching videos, playing games, frequently checking email, and even talking, can all rapidly drain its battery. Your only options to deal with this problem are either to carry charging cables every where you go or to use iPhone Extended Battery Packs.

The most economical choice would be to make sure that you charge your phone every night and to keep or carry extra charging cables wherever you use your phone, whether it's the office, car, or airports. This alternative will work for many people most of the time.

However, depending on charging cables is not the best solution for those who want to watch movies on an airplane, use the GPS outside of a car, or use your phone at all if you end up in a seat nowhere near an outlet during a long business meeting. Applications are being released every day that are making their on-the-go owners even more dependent on their iPhone. For example, some medical personnel carry them for entering patient data and can't depend on being tethered to an outlet. Many runners count on the GPS to track their route.

If having a working iPhone is essential to you, it might be worth considering the purchase of an extended battery pack. Most of them can be purchased for between $40 and $100 and offer a variety of form factors, depending on your need. Some are separate units that connect to your iPhone with a cable and some actually fit around the phone like a sleeve.

Something else to consider is that the iPhone battery is not designed to be user-replaceable and will need to be eventually replaced. When it no longer holds a sufficient charge, the user sends in their phone and $86.50 to Apple to have it replaced in about 3 days. Having an external battery pack can help you avoid or delay the $86.50 charge (at least until it's convenient for you to be without it for a few days), using the external battery to power the device.

The iPhone is an amazing device that has a major Achilles heel in its battery life. Purchasing an external battery pack will be well worth the cost to avoid being stuck without access to your phone, GPS, iPod, web, and the innumerable applications to which you have grown to love.
