One of the major, little known "secrets" to photography marketing success is that you must sound successful, to be successful

You need to talk as if you are already successful, even if you aren't as successful as you'd like to be yet. Now, I don't mean you are arrogant - just that what you say sounds very successful.

This also involves how you refer to your craft, product and service. But this is so important, that I will devote an entire article to this area in the future.

Here's a few examples of how to sound successful:

When people ask you how you are doing, you ALWAYS respond with "Terrific!" Never, ever tell ANYONE that something is bothering you, or you're worried about something. Just always be up beat, enthusiastic and positive. This clearly says to people that you are already very successful. It's amazing how well this works.

And remember, people want to work with people who are already successful. They do not want to work with someone who is not successful. So it's very important you totally sound successful to EVERYONE you talk with.

When people ask you how business is - you ALWAYS respond that business is fantastic. (And this is really true, because in this business climate, having ANY business coming into your studio is fantastic.) So keep it positive. Be excited with everyone you speak with - both in person and on the phone or in emails. No matter how "down" you may feel at the moment - never let it show to a prospect, client, friend, or even family member.

When you are talking on the phone, and you get to the point where you are going through your appointment book looking for a time for someone to come in and "chat" with you, you always rustle the pages, and say something like, "Wow, we sure are booked up. Let's see, there's got to be a place somewhere...... (pause as you continue to look for an available time and continue rustling the pages loudly so she can hear the pages turning on the other end of the phone.) ... Oh! Here's one! How about next Tuesday, at 3:30?" (Or if you do everything on a computer, be sure she can HEAR you pounding on the keys, looking for an opening.)

You see, if you are always talking like this, it will get around town in a hurry. People will tell other people that you are doing so well, even in this economy. And the end result will be that people will be calling and emailing you about the possibility of hiring you to do their photography for them.

I realize that the things we discussed here may not seem all that important to you at first - but trust me - they are REALLY IMPORTANT if you want to become tremendously successful and financially well off with your photography business.

Always remember, NOTHING SUCCEEDS LIKE SUCCESS! You must look, act, sound and dress AS IF you are already successful, and then you will become successful. Strange, but so very true.

All the best,

Charles J. Lewis, M. Photog., Cr.
