Warts are small, benign lesions on the skin. While harmless, these skin growths may cause embarrassment and discomfort. Fortunately, there are several treatment options available. We can teach you how to remove warts easily and enjoy healthy, clear skin.
Warts are caused by a common virus called Human Papilloma Virus, or HPV. Almost everyone is exposed to the virus at some time, and scientists are not yet sure why some people are affected by it, while others never develop warts at all. These lesions appear when the virus is permitted to enter the body through cuts or abrasions on the skin's surface. HPV causes rapid skin overgrowth in one area, resulting in the formation of a wart. Warts can appear anywhere on the body, but they are most common on the hands and soles of the feet. There are 5 types of warts, including common warts, which are found mainly on the hands; Plantar warts, which grow on the bottoms of the feet; periungual warts, which affect the fingernail and toenail areas; filiform warts, which are most common in or on the nose or around the mouth; and flat warts, which can appear anywhere except the soles of the feet.
Your doctor can show you how to remove warts safely. The most common method of wart removal consists of applying salicylic acid to the affected area. Salicylic acid is sold over the counter at most pharmacies; it is safe for most people, but should not be used on children under the age of 5. The medication is applied to the wart twice a day until the wart can be easily removed.
For those who prefer not to treat their warts themselves, the family doctor or a dermatologist can remove the blemishes via any of three common outpatient procedures. With a process called curettage, the warts are cut off using surgical scissors or a scalpel under local anesthesia. Alternatively, using a procedure called cryotherapy, the doctor applies liquid nitrogen to the unwanted warts. This freezes them and causes them to drop off. Finally, your physician may cauterize the warts with an electrical current.
In addition to these wart removal techniques, home remedies are often employed for treating these unpleasant bumps on the skin. Covering the area with duct tape is a popular method; the skin is kept covered with duct tape for up to 2 months, or until the wart pulls away as the tape is removed. Various other home remedies are often used, such soaking the warts in hot water or applying lemon juice and garlic to the affected area.
If you have warts, you do not have to endure the social embarrassment and discomfort they can cause. You have several options for getting rid of warts, either on your own or with assistance from a doctor. With one of the convenient wart remedies available, you can get rid of your warts and have smooth, blemish-free skin.
