Iowans love riding motorcycles, but the reality is that riding a motorcycle is probably the most dangerous thing that most of us do. An alarming fact is that there are an increasing number of motorcycle crashes every year on Iowa's roads. A motorcycle crash is a violent and dangerous event with almost 90% of all reported motorcycle crashes resulting in injury or death to the motorcyclist.

The majority of motorcycle accidents are caused because the other drive did not see the motorcycle before the collision or did not see the motorcycle until it was too late to avoid the crash. Intersections are the most likely place for motorcycle accidents. It is common at intersections that the other car will violate the motorcycle's right-of-way and pull out in front of the rider.

How Can I Prevent Becoming a Motorcycle Crash Statistic?

Training- 92% of motorcycle riders involved in accidents are essentially without training. They often are self-taught or learned from family or friends. Motorcycle rider training experience reduces the number of crashes and reduces the severity of injuries in crashes. Taking a course at the local community college to brush-up on your skills may make the difference in avoiding an accident. Training is the #1 thing that you can do to help reduce your chances of being in an accident if you are in an accident reduce the severity of your injuries.

Do Not Drink and Drive- Almost one-half of the all fatal motorcycle crashes involve alcohol use by the motorcycle rider. Alcohol is a depressant which will reduce your reaction time, balance, and other physical requirements of riding a motorcycle. If someone pulls out in front of you and you have been drinking, then you may be impaired enough that you are not able to avoid the accident. Proper

Maintenance- while only 3% of motorcycle crashes involve vehicle failures, most of them are single vehicle accidents where the rider lost control because of a flat tire. Losing control at high speed often results in injuries to the rider. Just taking 30 seconds to inspect your tires and wheels before hitting the road can save your life.

Riding a motorcycle is a popular hobby for many, especially since its summertime. There are rules and regulations that should be followed to ensure your safety and the safety of others on the road. Taking the time to do the three simple steps above may prevent an accident and save your life.
